The dispute in Kashmir goes back for many many years. Many claim that it is the world's oldest dispute. It is primarily as dispute between the countries of India and Pakistan. Kashmir is technically considered a part of India; Pakistan does not like this situation as the country is primarily Islam.

Possible reasons for the conflict in Kashmir:

• The 1947 occupation by India of Kashmir.

• the lack of a defined state during the British empire
• After the British left the Indian Subcontinent was divided by religion, leaving areas of mixed religion foroced to decide which counry they wanted to go to. This also resulted in ethno-nationalism.
