George: gotcha day 10/27/01; bridge day 4/28/06 (possible brain tumor; old age)
George of the Jungle was already an old man when someone who worked at a vet's office found him wandering around. He was taken to the office where he was diagnosed with heartworm. Knowing that he would be put down if they sent him to the shelter like they were supposed to do, one of the vets made it her mission to find a rescue that would take him.
He looked like a golden (kind of), so golden retriever rescue took him! When I got him as a foster he was 40 lbs overweight and covered in lumps and bumps. The weight and the heartworm were taken care of quickly. We really didn't think he'd be around very long, but he had other plans!
He was never adopted -- except by me -- and stuck around for 4 1/2 more years! George was very opinionated. He knew what he wanted when he wanted it. He communicated his desire for something with a very loud, WOOF-WOOF! WOOF-WOOF! Always that pattern! Then it was up to me to figure out exactly what it was that he desired -- to go out, to come in, a cookie, a meal, or was he just watching some movement outside?
Toward the end when he couldn't get up by himself or walk, it was usually that he needed help going outside. As frail and old as George was, he always wanted to be in the middle of things -- doggie play groups, doggie birthday parties. Wherever the action was, George was there; not playing, but hanging out in his own unobtrusive way! George loved life and wormed his way into everyone's heart! Scarlett and I miss him a lot.
