In 1973, at the ripe old age of 18, I began singing with my then-girlfriend and later wife with her parents' band, "Terri & the TJ's". Having been a rather shy type, this gave me the experience of being on-stage in front of people, gave me stage presence experience, microphone technique, as well as a feel to what the music business was all about. "Mom" was a good professional teacher for me. (I doubled also as their "roadie", learning how to pack and move equipment 1:00-2:00 in the night)
I decided to try mobile
DJ work in 1977, after being asked to play some recorded music at a family member's
wedding the year before. (brother-in-law Tony's)
Although my music sources at that time were merely a turntable and an 8-track player!
(stop belly-laughing! remember, folks, this was 1976!)
I knew I wanted to do mobile DJ
work. I had the "bug" The timing was right at the start of tremendously popular "disco fever". It seemed everyone was taking "disco dancing" lessons. Everyone seemed to want a DJ who could have the musical diversity to play ALL genres of music, as opposed to bands who seemed to still be stuck in "yesterday's" sounds. I was 22 yrs. old at that time, and immediately was working almost every weekend at functions, thanks in part to the "salesladyship" of my then-wife, Lani.
I'm
now 47 and been working very steady since.
"I love
music & I love people--and it's a great
way to
augment my income" is what I often reply to, "You really seem to enjoy doing what you do".
Since those early days,
music
sources have greatly improved through
CD's and CD players, along with much better amps and speakers.
Starting in 1992, I
began as a Karaoke host with another company,
while still DJ'ing for "Abound With Sounds". "I
wanted to gain knowledge, experience with
this "up and coming karaoke craze." It was much like
the band thing I had done years earlier, but
everyone can get involved. Part of my job was to sing karaoke songs to demonstrate karaoke to the audience. Instead of watching others, now the audience can be the star. (many karaoke singers have better voices than those singers they used to listen to and watch.
Karaoke is an interactive way to have fun!
As long as I enjoy doing DJ & karaoke work, I will continue working for many years to come!!
