It was a warm sunny day in Coolsville, and Scooby-Doo was sitting in the front row seats of the show "Daphne Blake: Coast to Coast", with his friends, Shaggy, Velma, Savannah, and Madison.
Savannah went into her sister's office. Her sister, Daphne, was just coming out of the office.
"I was going to say you've got five minutes before the camera starts rolling, Daph," she said.
"Thanks, sis," Daphne said.
Sabrina was standing behind the curtain, waiting for Daphne.
"You remember which video clips to show, right, Daph?" Sabi asked.
"Yeah, I remember. The video clips of the ghosts haunting the Bates house," Daphne replied.
"That's right. I just wanted to make sure, because last time you accidently played the video clips of our rafting trip in the Missouri River. You know - the part where I leaned too far on one side of the raft, and I fell out - headfirst!" Sabrina replied smartly. She was still mad about Daphne's mistake - although it was several weeks ago.
"Okay, okay, Sab. Chill out. I know which ones to roll this time," Daphne reassured. She went out onto the stage, and the audience applaused.
In the seats next to Scooby and his friends, sat a small, seven year-old child named Cassie, who was applauding wildly.
"Daphne Blake's my hero," she whispered to Shaggy as the show started. "I watch her show as much as I can."
"Excuse Cassie," her mother, Rachael, giggled. "She's a huge fan of Daphne."
Sabrina watched Daphne go out onto stage. Then she waved to Freddy to start rolling cameras. Fred nodded, and started filming.
Meanwhile, above them all, sat an engineer, working on a burned out lightbulb. As he screwed the bulb in place, he flipped up the light switch. All of a sudden, all the lights in the building started to flicker. Everyone gasped.
"What's going on up there, Ed?" Sabrina yelled up to the engineer who was standing on the platform of the ladder.
"Nothin' wrong, Sabi. I just found a scratched wire. I'll just fix it and everything'll be a-ok," Ed responded, reaching for the scraped wire. But when he touched it, he got an electric shock! Ed was thrown from the ladder, and landed on the ground.
"Oh, no! Short out! She's gonna blow!" Ed cried as he scrambled away. The lights all started to flicker, then they all started to spark. Thousands of sparks flew from the lights, and showered onto the people in the audience.
"Fire! Scatter! Run!" Daphne yelled. She turned around and ran to her office, where Savannah was. She met her sister in the hallway.
"The studio's catching on fire!" Daphne warned as she ushered her twin sister from the office. They made a break for it.
The studio was rapidly filling up with smoke. They bolted out the door, and they were safe! Daphne fell into Fred's arms, and Fred hugged her tight. Then Sabrina and the Blake sisters spotted Rachael. She was crying hysterically, and kneeled down on the pavement. They rushed to her side.
"What's wrong, miss?" Savannah, Daphne's twin sister, asked.
"My daughter's in there! I lost her in the smoke!" Rachael cried. Sabrina took her hand, and tried to support her.
They later found the little girl - dead. She was buried under a mound of broken planks of wood.
Rachael was a single parent. She couldn't afford to embalm the child, or even a proper coffin for the burial. So she and the gang made a strong wooden box, built of the stongest oak. Then they placed the child in the 'coffin', and took her to her favorite spot, high on the bank near the Wichali River that ran through their backyard. They said their prayers, and laid the child to rest. Everyone left in tears.
That night, the whole gang stayed the night at the Blake mansion. Then in their sleep, Daphne, Sabrina, and Savannah heard a piculiar noise. THUMP, THUMP, THUMP, THUMP. The four bolted up in bed. They peered all around their rooms, and when they found nothing, they dozed off back to sleep.
Then, two days later, the thumping still continued. They asked the guys about it, but they said they didn't hear a thing. The girls have had it. They met each other out in the hallway. The thumping still continued, but not from the house!
The three headed out the front door, dressed in pajamas and robes. They grabbed up a few shovels from the garage, and Daphne grabbed the keys to the Mystery Machine from the nightstand in Fred's room. They fired up the van, and drove as quietly as they could, straining their ears to listen for the thumping noises. They followed the strange thumping noises to - Rachael's house! Daphne parked the van on the curb and then got the shovels from the back. She handed each of the others a shovel, and then they got out of the van. On their way towards the yard, Savannah looked at Sabrina.
"Are you sure this is the right way?" she asked. Sabrina nodded, and put her finger over her lips as a signal to be quiet. Savannah obeyed, and then she followed the others onto the property. By then, a heavy rain started to come down. The soft ground became muddy and cold. They followed the noises to Cassie's burial spot!
They listened harder. Yup. The noise was definetily coming from under there. With that, they started to dig into the fertile ground. As the hole got deeper, the slippier the dirt underneath became. The four were soon standing in a hole up to their hips, and still digging. As they dug, the thumping became louder and louder. As rain pouered down, the rain water trickled into the hole, turning the dirt into thick black mud, that made a sickening sucking sound whenever one of them took a step. The rain became harder, harder. But the three just kept digging, scooping out large amounts of mud and rocks.
Rachael woke up from her deep sleep. She peered out the window to see if the sun had started to rise yet. Instead, she saw four shadowy figures - digging into her daughter's grave! She ran to her phone, and called the police.
Just as their shovels scraped the surface of the coffin, sirens were heard and bright red lights shone over them.
"Get out of there, grave robbers!" the officer said.
The thumping got louder, until Daphne couldn't stand it anymore. Just as she was going to stagger out of the hole with her friend and sister, she whipped around and started to dig into the mud, clearing the area around the coffin lid with her bare hands. The police went down into the hole to restrain her, but she reacted viciously. Whenever one of the officers tried to drag her from the hole, Daphne kicked and beat at him, forcing him to get away. Soon, Sabrina joined Daphne and together they continued to dig. Finally, the area around the lid was cleared, and resisting the officers, Sabrina and Daphne pulled up the coffin lid, grunting and breathing heavily. Daphne reached inside, and pulled out the limp body of little Cassie. The body laid still in her arms. Rachael gasped.
"Put the child back!" an officer yelled.
"She's alive, and we can prove it!" Sabrina growled.
"Just take us to the doctor's office," Daphne implied.
Journey and Savannah nodded. The officers gave in, loaded the four into a police car, and Rachael rode up front. Little Cassie's body was set in her lap. Then, they sped to the local doctor's office, saying to the group that they were wrong the whole way.
"You'll see. She's alive. We know it," Savannah said in a spooky voice. Rachael shivered.
Soon, they were at the doctor's office. They all went up to the door, with Daphne, Sabrina, and Savannah following in a single file line. The officer knocked. When the doctor answered, he was surprised to see the police, the mother, and the body of the child he had pronounced dead a few days before.
"These weirdos think the kid's still alive. Prove it to them that she's dead," the officer said, pointing to the Blake sisters and Sabrina. Rachael held out the dead body of Cassie. Reluctantly, the doctor agreed. He let them in, and they started to run some tests.
A little while, later, while listening to Cassie's heart on the stethoscope, he detected something - a faint heartbeat!
"Her heart's beating! She is . alive!" the doctor exclaimed.
"You were right!" Rachael cried. "You're heroes!"
That following morning, Cassie awoke in a hospital bed. Then the doctor came into her room. He smiled.
"So you're awake. You have some visitors," he said softly.
The doctor opened up the door, and let in her mother, Sabrina, Daphne, Savannah, Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, and Velma. Cassie's eyes widened. She gave her mom a big hug. Then when she saw Daphne, she gave her a hug too, along with Sabri, Savannah, Scoob, Shag, and everyone else. Scooby and the gang gave Rachael some money - about twenty thousand dollars. That would let the mother buy the things that she wanted to afford. You bet she was grateful! Then Daphne pulled out a large basket from behind her back, and set it on the bed.
Cassie looked at Daphne curiously. Daphne grinned, and reached her hand into the basket. As everyone watched, Daphne pulled out - a gray and white kitten. It mewed at Cassie.
"She's for you," Sabrina said.
"Yeah. My cat, Thomasina, had kittens, and we figured that we could give you one of them," Savannah finished.
"That is, if it's okay with your mother," Daphne finished.
The kitten mewed again, and Rachael couldn't help but say yes!
"What are you going to name her?" Daphne asked as she handed the child the kitten. The kitten purred loudly.
"Sabrina," Cassie replied as she hugged her new pet.
Everyone started laughing.
"What do ya know? I've got a cat named after me!" Sabrina laughed.
"Reah! A rat!" Scooby howled.
As Scooby and the gang left the room, Rachael turned to the three girls.
"How did you know that Cassie was till alive?" she asked.
"We don't know," Sabrina replied, shrugging her shoulders.
The three girls never did forget the incident. It always lingered in their minds. But at least they'll always know they saved the life of somebody very special.
