At the Final Moments

Copyright 2000

At her window of opportunity, Velma jumped out of a high window. Hoping that there was a bush to land on. To her luck, Fred was on the ground and saw her fall and rushed to catch her. He caught her. "Thanks."

"No problem." Daphne ran from out back, and saw Fred putting down Velma. "Hey Fred!" She yelled. "I think I found something!" She said, jealousy in her voice.

Shaggy and Scooby looked out of the window that Velma jumped out of. "Are you alright?" "I'm fine!" Fred and Daphne went out back to find the something that Daphne pointed out.

"A footprint that stepped into wet cement." "Our first clue." "But what caused Velma to leap out of a window?" "She leaped out of a window?" "Yeah."

Fred and Daph poked their heads around the corner. Now they saw Velma talking to Scooby, Shaggy and the plantation owner. "What is she saying?" "I don't know."

"There's defiantly something in that building." "What made you want to jump?" "The ghost was after me, he blocked my only exit, so I opened the window, jumped out and hoped that someone or something would catch my fall." Velma replied.

"Do you kids need any flashlights?" "We have some out in the Mystery Machine." "I'll be in the stables. Just yell if you need anything." "We will."

So, Velma, Scooby and Shaggy went to the Mystery Machine and searched for a few flashlights. "Aha!" "Aha what?" "I found cassette tapes."

"I didn't know that we even had a tape player." Velma uttered. "I borrowed one of Sabrina's. Let's take a listen." They hooked up the cassette player to the speakers to the radio in the Mystery Machine.

"Shut up and listen." (Cassette tape) We've got to make up a mystery for Velma, Shaggy and Scooby to solve."

"Only us?" "Shut it!" "There's something I need to tell you in private." "Private?" Velma inquired.

"We need to loose them so I can tell you." "Yeah, Shaggy and Velma would wanna know why." "They don't hafta know. What they don't know don't hurt us."

Outside, "Where's Shaggy, Scooby and Velma." "They're in the Mystery Machine looking for flashlights. Last I saw." "I didn't see them leave." "Would they?" "Nah." "What if they find the tapes?" "Let's find them."

"We would have to get people to help us." "If Velma and or Shaggy find this tape, they'll want to quit the gang." "Yeah, and Shaggy would want the Mystery Machine." Click.

"That's something I can sleep on." Shaggy said. "Yeah. I've been thinking about quitting the gang too." Velma confessed.

"And me, there's got to be, like, something else, in store for me besides roaming the countryside for a mystery." Shaggy admitted. "Plus, Sabrina's probably itching when I'm returning."

"By the way, how's my sister?" "She's doing great. She's eager to hear from you." "Maybe when I quit the gang, I can live somewhere else than Coolsville. Probably I'll go back with you to visit her."

"No problem." Velma sighed in relief; she took out her laptop and typed in clues. Plus she sent an email telling the other two that she's considering quitting the gang. But she didn't put any reasons why.

"Hey Velma! There's like, another side to this tape!" "Turn it over and let's have a listen." She hooked up the cassette player to a plug in her computer to record this.

"We've got to pick a specific place and time for this to happen." "How about that plantation out on Ryder's Corner off of exit 16?" "That's perfect." "They won't know what hit them." Click.

"Thank goodness we know who our real friends are." Velma responded, folding her arms. "Yeah! You think you know a guy!" Shaggy agreed. "Ree roo!" Scooby added.

"I want to get the first side on my computer." She said, saving the sound file. "Tape's rewound and ready for playback." Shaggy confirmed.

Velma got the entire three tapes on six different sound files. She saved them all and logged out of her computer. They got out of the Mystery Machine and went for Mr. Strata.

"MR. STRATA!" Velma hollered. "What is it kids?" He asked. Velma, Shaggy and Scooby, and Mr. Strata met half way.

"First of all, I'm twenty two." Velma said. "Sorry." "That's quite alright."

"Can I ask Velma?" "Sure." "Have you came into contact with a Mr. Fred Jones and a Miss. Daphne Blake?"

"A week ago. They said that they wanted to set up a phony mystery for Miss. Dinkley, Mr. Rogers and their dog."

"Mr. Strata, I'm Miss. Dinkley! That's Mr. Rogers." "Wait," They saw two shadows. "Come over here kids, I think I found something."

That was the signal that told Daph and Freddy that Mr. Strata pointed out a clue.

But what really happened, when they were far enough away, "Did you find the tapes?" "In the Mystery Machine."

"What did you do with them?" "We played them on my sister's cassette player, hooked up to the radio speakers in the van. I recorded it on my laptop."

"So like, if they get destroyed, we have the copies of their conversations." "What's your plan of action?"

"That's the problem, we don't have a plan of action. We've considering going our separate ways."

Freddy and Daphne approached them cautiously. "Hey gang!" "Follow my lead." Velma whispered, winking at Scooby and Shaggy.

"Hey." "You've got any clues?" "Uh, no." "Like, we were asking Mr. Strata a few questions about the ghost." "Rah."

Mr. Strata, on the side of the three, followed their leads. "I hope the information that I've given you is enough to convict this crook." "We hope so Mr. Strata." Velma said. "Is it any accurate?" Shaggy asked.

"I never knew a bunch of kids that asked a lot of questions." "We want to get down under the skin of the mystery Mr. Strata. That's our job."

"Maybe if you show the three of us where you found the clue?" "Sure, follow me."

They got to a safe distance to whisper. "Thanks for covering for us Mr. Strata." "No problem, if they knew that you three are following their 'plan', they won't get suspicious."

"Thanks for the helpful information." Shaggy said aloud. "No problem. I'll be in the stables once again if you need anything." "We'll holler if we have anymore questions."

They caught the 'fake' ghost and had them arrested. In the Mystery Machine, in the back, Velma, Scooby and Shaggy were typing in Velma's mystery logs what really happened, and saved it under a fake file.

Velma wrote what was going to be checked by Freddy. She wrote what they found, where and the questions that they asked. And what was going around.

In front… "I think that they're falling for our plan." Daphne whispered. What they didn't know was that Shaggy was recording what they said.

He 'accidentally' left Sabrina's recording travel cassette player with speakers in front, recording everything.

"Uh, we're going to leave the van with you." "Uh, like, thanks Freddy." They dropped the two down at the set of Coast to Coast and they went to Shaggy's motel room.

"What do you want to do now, leader girl?" "First, I've got to print this log for Freddy to see." "But like, basically, all of it's a lie."

"He'll think it's the truth, then we're bailing." Velma said, printing out the log.

Shaggy's father, Robert Rogers, came to visit them. "So, did you solve the mystery?"

"There wasn't a mystery dad, like, Freddy and Daphne set the whole thing." "Just to like, let you know, everyone in Coolsville knows about the 'plan'." "Dad, I'm going back to Las Vegas to rejoin Sabrina."

"What about you Velma?" "I'm going to go with him, so I can see my sister." "That's the best thing." "But, you have to do a favor. Don't tell them we left, but tell them that we went to go solve a mystery out west." "Okay."

He left. "Come on Velma, let's get your things and leave." "What about the Mystery Machine?" "I'm taking her with me." "Okay, let's go!"

So, here's what we know now, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby were fooled by their own friends, they find out that the mystery was a sham, then they find out that Coolsville knew the plan.

And the major part, they had it, they're leaving and forming a new mystery team.

"Okay Shaggy! Let's leave!" Velma cheered. The three watched as Coolsville disappeared from their rear view mirror.
