On January 22nd, some key members of the Spur of the Moment Records family sat down, cracked open some booze and brought out the monopoly board for a rousing game of chance, real-estate, and eventually, brutal fighting and strained friendships. However, we all came out the other end a little drunk, and a little more aware of each others tolerance for bullshit. If this sounds like a soap opera, it was.

For those who may not be familiar with the game of monopoly, it is basically a game where you try to accumulate the most wealth, and run everyone else into bankruptcy. The funniest part is, when drunk people participate in the game, its easy to forget that the money is fake, and in the end your friend sitting across the table can become your worst enemy.

The game began at around 9:00. The opponents were; Jonathan Abrosimoff and Adam Dysarz (Junipur), Steve Presant (Touch Green), Ryan Babin (Staid), Ryan's girlfriend Lindsay Jackson, and Jeremy Pfaff (formerly of Paisley). Ben Srokosz assumed the duty of bartender and banker, and we were off to the races.

The game started friendly, with each player slowly building up properties and taking the occasional bank loan. A rule was set by all that no bank loan should exceed $2000. It was apparant from the beginning that Steve, Adam and Jeremy were far more passionate than the rest.

Some early highlights: Jeremy resorting to profanity each time he landed on someone's property, Ben giving cash prizes for positive comments about his CD (which was playing on the stereo, and Steve taking a risky move building houses on the red properties.

By about 11:00, all of the properties were bought except Boardwalk, and it was time for the weaker counterparts to start dropping like flies. Sure enough, Ryan and Lindsay sold their properties at a rediculous price and abandoned us all. Under the influence of about 6 beers thus far, Ben was doing a fine job banking and pointed out to Adam that his loan was a little high. Thats when the shit hit the fan.

At about 11:40 Jeremy got a little excited about landing on Steve's strategically placed red properties and spilled his beer all over the table, the money, and Jonathan's lap. After this embarassing moment, Jonathan bowed down to let the remaining three players go at it. Jonathan had played valiantly, but unfortunately took too much comfort in Ben's bartending skills.

The hostility between Steve and Adam had been brewing all night and was becoming the main attraction of the game. Adams loan exceeded $6000 by midnight and both Jeremy and Steve were starting to doubt Ben's record keeping. Ben however thought his record keeping was just fine as he had drunk 8 beers and was having a good laugh at all the mud slinging. By about 12:30 Jeremy finally gave up and split his properties between the final two powerhouses. It was time for Adam's bottomless debt to face the vast wealth of Steve Presant.

It is still impossible to explain how Adam and Steve kept from burning the board and duking it out. Between 12:30 and 1:30, Adam reduced his debt to $1400, but Steve had built a small empire in the 'west side'. At 1:30 Adam stormed off to the washroom to 'discuss some business'. Steve misinterpreted this as a cry of defeat, and surrendered his earnings to the bank. When Adam returned, he tried desparately to continue the game but in the end realized that he had little or no money, few properties, and a debt to boot. The two men shook hands, and retired to the living room for some chit chat with the early folders. Perhaps even more relieved than Adam, Ben found himself a comfy chair to fight off the battle in his stomach and eventually fall asleep..............

In no way does the title or graphics on this page attempt to abuse the fame of Monopoly, or make fun of it. We are simply paying tribute to this great game and the fun that it supplied us with on the evening in question. Any attempts to take legal action against Spur of the Moment Records for using the Monopoly artwork will be definately uncool.
