Chapter 8

Durbbie:

"Mornin' sugar," I said greeting Kevin in the kitchenette. "How was your sleepeth last nighteth?"

He smiled at me. Now I remember why I'm a photographer… "Pretty good. It was a long night," he answered.

"Why's that?" I asked taking a seat next to him with my bowl of Wheaties.

"Somebody who had the bunk above me got a phone call at 3 in the morning," he said looking at me with raised eyebrows. I was caught. So I did the only thing I could think of: I looked at my hands and pushed a strand of curl behind my ear. "Who was on the other line?" Kevin asked. I fidgeted gain. I did NOT want to have this conversation right now.

"So," I said changing the subject. "What's on the agenda for today?"

Kevin looked at me hard and stared back at his cereal. "Well," he started. "Kristen's flying in tonight from Germany."

"Who's Kristen?" I asked.

Kevin smiled. "My fiancée."

That struck a chord. Scott. Damn. "Oh," I said masking my pain. "When did you get engaged?" I didn't hear his answer because I was absorbed in my thought. "Excuse me," I said going back to my bunk and grabbing my cell phone. I hit speed dial on my phone. "Scott," I said. "We need to talk."

"Oh baby. That feels good baby. Lower LOWER," Scott moaned.

"That's IT!" I said snapping. "You ass hole! How dare you!" I yelled at him.

"Durbbie?" he asked rather surprised. I heard a female voice say something in the background. "Shush," he said gently as I heard her moan and felt my stomach clench with anger. "Durbs! I wasn't expecting…"

"Stop it with the Durbs!" I said through clenched teeth.

"But!"

"I've had enough with you!" I said.

"Are you yelling at me?" Scott challenged.

I was taken aback a little by this comment. "Yeah!" I said gathering my courage. "And I'm SOBER!"

I could hear the little cheerleaders in my head going wild with my bold move. "Why you little!" he said more infuriated that before.

"I've been meaning to tell you," I said with a hint of sarcasm, "it's over. And tell you're little prostitute over there she can have you!" And with that I clicked the off button on the phone. With that boulder off my shoulders, I went to go meet the others.

Melissa:

Durbbie came bounding into the back of the bus with renewed enthusiasm. I haven't seen her this happy since she first started dating Scott.

"Peed a boo!" Durbbie said messing up Brian's hair.

Brian looked at me and laughed. I shrugged. "She gets randomer ever day," I said shaking my head.

"Go figure," Brian said. "Leave it to our management to find someone like her."

"You know you like it," Durbbie said playfully. OK, somebody's feeling friendly.

"Huh," Brian said. "That's news to me."

"What's going on with you?" I asked laughing at the situation at hand.

"Nothing much. I just, you know, broke up with Scott," she said with a big grin.

"Who's Scott?" Nick said waking up.

"Just some jerk who was screwing a prostitute when I called."

Nick was wide-awake in a matter of seconds. "I don't think I even want to ask," he grumbled as he made a sandwich of me because he ended up sitting on the other side of me. "What are we doing today?" he asked.

"Don't look at me," I said. "I'm only the photographer."

Kevin:

I found Durbbie and the others in the back of the bus. "You OK?" I asked quietly while passing by Durbbie.

She grinned. "Never better."

"What happened?" I questioned.

"I dumped my good for nothing, cheated on me several times, slob of a boyfriend."

What drugs is she on? "And you're OK with all of this?" I asked suspiciously.

She grinned. "Kev, it was something I should have done a long time ago," Durbbie said sincerely.

I shrugged and headed off to talk to the others.
