Prologue

"I know I'm not perfect but I can smile/and I hope that you see this heart behind my tired eyes/ If you tell me that I can't, I will, I will, I'll try all night"
~Dido's "I'm No Angel"

Sara looked at Nick as he munched on his sandwich. It was a rare moment where everything seemed right in the world. The house contained faint echoes of instrumental chamber pieces, the sun was shining, and Sara was content.

Nick looked up from his seat and met Sara's gaze. The two lovers smiled at each other as no words were needed to say all that needed to be said. Both knew that each other was the love of their own lives and held each other dearly with each and every passing day.

Nick sneezed and, to Sara's dismay, ended the moment. With a hand on either side of the sink, he sighed.

"You OK Baby?" Sara asked concerned.

Nick stubbornly stood there, waiting for another sneeze. When none came, he replied a quiet, "Yeah, I'm fine."

"It's been a week. Why don't you go visit the doctor?" Sara said walking over to Nick and placing a hand gently on his back.

"It'll go away," Nick said looking out the window and into the yard where two puppies were playing, "it always does." He looked at her through the side of his eye and spied a small, worried frown had crossed her face. "Don't look that way," Nick said reaching for her hands and pulling her into his arms. "It scares me."

"I just want you to be better," Sara said softly as she was comforted by Nick resting his chin on her shoulder. "I hate it when you're like this."

"I know Baby, me too," Nick said just as softly as Sara had.

The two looked at each other, as was a habit of theirs.

"Promise me you'll go to the doctor tomorrow?" Sara asked using her eyes to ensure her answer.

Nick rolled his eyes. "Sara there's no need to."

"Please Nick? For me?"

With a sigh, Nick surrendered. "Fine. I'll go tomorrow."
