INT. PUBLIC RESTROOM. JAMES SUNDERLAND stands in front of the sink and examines his face in the mirror. JAMES Mary…. Could you really be in this town? EXT. STREET. A car is parked in one of the spots. JAMES walks to the ledge overlooking the lake and leans on it during the voiceover. MARY (V/O) In my restless dreams, I see that town. Silent Hill. You promised you'd take me there someday, but you never did. Well I'm alone there now… In our 'special place'… Waiting for you… Cue music. JAMES I got a letter. The name on the envelope said 'Mary.' My wife's name… It's ridiculous, couldn't possibly be true…That's what I keep telling myself… A dead person can't write a letter. Mary died of that damn disease three years ago. So then why am I looking for her? Our 'special place'… What could she mean? This whole town was our special place. Does she mean the park on the lake? We spend the whole day there. Just the two of us, staring at the water. Could Mary really be there? Is she really alive…waiting for me? EXT. CEMETARY. ANGELA kneels in front of a grave. JAMES approaches. JAMES Excuse me, I… ANGELA (gasping, stands) I, I'm sorry…I, I…I was just… JAMES No, it's okay. I didn't mean to scare you. I'm kind of lost. ANGELA Lost? JAMES Yeah. I'm looking for Silent Hill. Is this the right way? ANGELA Um yeah… It's hard to see with this fog, but there's only the one road. You can't miss it. JAMES Thanks. (He turns to go.) ANGELA But… JAMES Yes? ANGELA I think you'd better stay away. This uh…this town… there's something…'wrong' with it. It's kind of hard to explain, but… JAMES Is it dangerous? ANGELA Maybe…and it's not just the fog either…It's… JAMES Okay. I got it. I'll be careful. ANGELA I'm not lying. JAMES No, I believe you. It's just…I guess I really don't care if it's dangerous or not. I'm going to town either way. ANGELA But why? JAMES I'm looking for…someone. ANGELA Who, who, who is it? JAMES Someone… (puts his hand to his head) very important to me. I'd do anything if I could be with her again. ANGELA Me too. I'm looking for my mama… I mean my mother. It's been so long since I've seen her. I thought my father and brother were here, but I can't find them either… I'm sorry… It's not your problem. JAMES No, I…I hope you find them. ANGELA Yeah, you too. EXT. TOWN, Street. There are streaks of blood on the ground. JAMES approaches the intersection. JAMES (unspoken) Are these marks…blood!? Camera pans off down the street to reveal a SHADOWY FIGURE moving down the foggy street. JAMES (unspoken) That shadow just now… EXT. TOWN, boarded-up underpass. JAMES crawls through boards. His radio begins to make a static sound. He takes it out and a FIGURE, previously unseen, stands slowly, squirming. It approaches James. James backs up slowly, picks up one of the boards from behind him and attacks the FIGURE with it. With a scream, the creature eventually falls. JAMES Is it dead? What the hell is it? It's not human… He leaves through the boards the way he came. The radio begins making noise again. He takes out the RADIO and shakes it. JAMES Oh yeah. …This thing broken? LAURA, a little girl runs up and kicks the key away before he can touch it, then stomps on his hand. JAMES Ow!! LAURA Ha-ha! (She runs off down the hall.) JAMES Hey wait! Damn it! INT. APARTMENT. A television set is blaring static. JAMES steps toward the armchair in front of it to discover a CORPSE. JAMES Oh my God…Who could've… INT. APARTMENT. The room is filled with moths. James approaches a hole in the wall and reaches in, then gasps and draws his hand quickly back out. A second attempt, and he draws out a key. INT. APARTMENT. JAMES enters an apartment to find PYRAMID HEAD assaulting two four-legged mannequins in the kitchen. JAMES quickly hides in the closet while PYRAMID HEAD finishes off his victims, dragging one of the bodies some way into the apartment. Eventually, PYRAMID HEAD drops the bodies and moves toward the closet. James takes out his gun and begins firing. The bullets seem to have little effect, but Pyramid Head, after some time, slowly slinks toward the exit. INT. APARTMENT. Bathroom. EDDIE is hunched over the toilet, vomiting. EDDIE It wasn't me! EDDIE Red Pyramid thing? I don't know what yer talkin' about. Honest. But I did see some weird-lookin' monsters. They scared the hell outta me, so I ran in here. JAMES Well I guess this place isn't too safe either. What happened here anyway? EDDIE Uh I, I told ya, I don't know. I'm not even from this town. I just, I just… JAMES You too, huh. Something just brought you here, right? EDDIE Umm…yeah. You could say that… JAMES Well, whatever it is… I think you better get out of here soon. EDDIE Yeah yer right. What about you? JAMES I'll leave as soon as I'm done here. Eddie…be careful. EDDIE James, I, I…um…You be careful too. INT. APARTMENT. A room with a large mirror. ANGELA is lying on the floor, facing the mirror with her back to JAMES, contemplating a knife in her hands. JAMES approaches carefully. ANGELA Oh…It's you. JAMES Yeah… I'm James. ANGELA Angela… JAMES Angela…okay. I don't know what you're planning… But there's always another way. ANGELA Really? But… You're the same as me. It's easier just to run. Besides, it's what we deserve. JAMES No…I'm not like you. ANGELA Are you afraid? I, I'm sorry. JAMES It's okay… Did you find your mother? ANGELA Not yet…She's not anywhere. JAMES Did she live in this apartment building? ANGELA I don't know.. JAMES So all you know is she lived in this town? ANGELA (Turns, still holding the knife) What did you say? (sits up) How do you know that? JAMES Well… I just figured, 'cause this is where you're looking for her. How else would I know? ANGELA Yeah… JAMES Am I right? ANGELA I'm so tired… JAMES So why did you come to this town anyway? ANGELA …I, I'm sorry… Did you find… the person you're looking for? JAMES Not yet. (produces photo of Mary) Her name's Mary. She's my wife… (shows photo to ANGELA) ANGELA (shakes her head) I'm sorry. JAMES It's okay. Anyway, she's dead. I don't know why I think she's here. ANGELA …She's dead? JAMES Don't worry, I'm not crazy. Least, I don't think so… ANGELA (standing) I've gotta find my mama… JAMES Should I go with you? This town's dangerous. Now I know what you meant back there in the cemetery. ANGELA I'll be okay by myself. Besides, I'd just slow you down. JAMES (points to knife) What about that? ANGELA Will you hold it for me? JAMES Sure. No problem. ANGELA If I kept it… I'm not sure what I might do. ANGELA holds out the knife to JAMES. He reaches for it slowly, but just as he is about to take it, ANGELA jerks away. ANGELA No!! (wields knife) I'm sorry…I've been bad… Please don't… ANGELA backs away slowly, puts the knife on the desk by the door, and runs out. JAMES picks the knife off the desk and examines it, then puts it in his pocket. EXT. ALLEYWAY. The girl from the apartment building, LAURA, sits on a large wall covered with drawings. JAMES approaches. JAMES You!* It was you, wasn't it? You're the one who stepped on my hand. LAURA I don't know. Maybe I did. JAMES What's a little girl like you doing here anyway? LAURA Huh? So, the hotel was your 'special place,' huh? I'll bet it was. JAMES begins to walk away, disgusted. MARIA Don't get so mad. I was just joking. Anyway, it's not that way. (points in the opposite direction) It's this way. JAMES begins to walk away. MARIA follows. JAMES You're coming with me? MARIA You were gonna just leave me? JAMES No, but… MARIA With all these monsters around? JAMES No, I just… MARIA I'm all alone here. Everyone else is gone… (leans on the railing) I look like Mary, don't I? You loved her, right? JAMES No…is that why you're here, too? (kneels down next to LAURA) LAURA She's here, isn't she? If you know where she is, tell me! I'm tired of walking. JAMES I wish I knew… LAURA But she said it in her letter… JAMES What letter!? LAURA (offers letter) …Wanna read it? But don't tell Rachel, okay? JAMES (accepts letter) Who's Rachel? LAURA She was our nurse. I took it from her locker. LETTER (unspoken) My dearest Laura, I'm leaving this letter with Rachel to give to you after I'm gone. I'm far away now. In a quiet beautiful place. Please forgive me for not saying goodbye before I left. Be well, Laura. Don't be too hard on the sisters. And Laura, about James… I know you hate him because you think he isn't nice to me, but please give him a chance. It's true he may be a little surly sometimes, and he doesn't laugh much. But underneath he's really a sweet person. Laura… I love you like my very own daughter. If things had worked out differently, I had hoped to adopt you. Happy 8th birthday, Laura. Your friend forever, Mary. CUT back to the hotel restaurant. JAMES is holding the letter, and LAURA is drawing a cat on the frosty window across the room. JAMES Laura… How old are you? LAURA Um, I turned eight last week. JAMES So Mary couldn't have died…three years ago… Could she really be here? Is this the 'quiet beautiful place' she was talking about? LAURA Me and Mary talked a lot about Silent Hill. She even showed me all her pictures. She really wanted to come back. That's why I'm here. Maybe you'll get it if you see the other letter… (she examines her pocket) The one Mary…huh? (distressed) I must have dropped it! JAMES Laura… LAURA I gotta find it! (runs out of the room) JAMES Laura! INT. HOTEL. Reading room. JAMES is reading a book on a desk. JAMES (unspoken) There's a book open on top of the desk. It looks like a medical book. I've already read enough medical books. None of them ever did any good. INT. HOTEL. Room 312. JAMES puts a tape into the VCR and sits down on the chair in front of the television. Cut to television screen filled with static. Suddenly the picture comes in and we see INT. HOTEL. Room 312. MARY is walking along the window, looking towards whomever is holding the camera. MARY Are you taping again? C'mon… (she sits facing the window and sighs) I don't know why, but I just love it here. It's so peaceful. (turns to camera) You know what I heard? This whole area used to be a sacred place. I think I can see why. It's too bad we have to leave… (she stands, addressing the camera.) Please promise you'll take me again, James. (begins to cough) The picture fades, but a new image is slowly being transposed over the old one. Though it is dark and hard to see, a very ill MARY is lying on a bed wearing pajamas. JAMES enters, crouches down next to the bed and kisses her on the forehead. MARY's arm moves slightly. JAMES reaches suddenly for something above MARY's head, a pillow. Quick shots of the two videos intersperse themselves, MARY looking out the window and JAMES smothering her with a pillow. The image finally fades to static. Cut to INT. HOTEL. Room 312. JAMES sits on the same chair with his head in his hands. A long moment of silence. JAMES Mary.* LAURA suddenly enters, walking up to JAMES' chair. LAURA So there you are, James. Did you get the letter? Did you find Mary? If not, let's get going already. (she shakes JAMES when he doesn't respond) Okay? JAMES Laura…* Mary's gone. She's dead. LAURA Liar! That's a lie! JAMES No, that's not true… LAURA She…she died 'cause she was sick? JAMES (looks away from LAURA) No. I killed her. LAURA You killer! Why'd you do it?! I hate you!! I want her back! Give her back to me! I knew it! You didn't care about her! I hate you, James! I hate you! I hate you! I hate you! She was always waiting for you…why…why… JAMES I'm sorry… (he stands) The Mary you know isn't here. LAURA walks slowly from the room. JAMES (quietly) Laura, I'm sorry. (he sits) The television static starts to become louder until a voice can be heard. MARY (v/o) James. Where are you? I'm waiting. I'm waiting for you. Please come to me. Do you hate me? Is that why you won't come? JAMES (standing) That voice… MARY (v/o) Please hurry. Are you lost? I'm near. I'm waiting nearby, James. Please. I want to see you, James. Can't you hear me? James… Please, James… James…James…James… INT. HOTEL. Reading Room. JAMES takes a pair of headphones and puts them on. As the dialogue begins, the camera moves to a view out the foggy window. Mary's empty bed appears floating in the fog. JAMES (v/o) Mary's going to die…? You…you must be joking… DOCTOR (v/o) I'm very sorry. JAMES (v/o) But you're a doctor. It's your job to heal people! How can you just let her die![?] DOCTOR (v/o) Please, calm down. As her doctor, I promise I'll do what I can. But…there's still no effective treatment for her condition. JAMES (v/o) How long does she have? DOCTOR (v/o) I'm afraid I'm not sure. 3 years at most…Perhaps 6 months… It's impossible to say with certainty. INT. HOTEL. Stairwell. The staircase is on fire. ANGELA is standing in the middle of it, contemplating a strange 'painting.' JAMES approaches slowly from the foot of the Stairwell. ANGELA (turns, sees JAMES) Mama! Mama, I was looking for you! Now you're the only one left. Maybe then… Maybe then I can rest. JAMES begins to back away uneasily. ANGELA follows. ANGELA Mama, why are you running away? (She touches JAMES' face then gasps and backs away.) You're not [my]* Mama. (still backing away) It's you… I, I'm sorry… JAMES Angela, no… ANGELA Thank you for saving me… But I wish you hadn't. Even Mama said it… I deserved what happened… JAMES No Angela, that's wrong! ANGELA (holds up her hand) No. Don't pity me. I'm not worth it. (turns away and then back, considering) Or maybe you think you can save me? Will you love me? Take care of me? Heal all my pain? (Beat.) That's what I thought. James. Give me back that knife. JAMES No…I, I won't. ANGELA Saving it for yourself? JAMES No…I'd never kill myself… ANGELA begins to climb the stairs. A large wall of fire blazes behind her. JAMES It's hot as hell in here. ANGELA You see it too? For me, it's always like this. (She turns and begins to climb the stairs. JAMES is left at the bottom.) INT. DARK HOTEL. An execution-type room with a large platform high above the floor level. JAMES runs to the center of the room and looks up. MARIA James! Camera pans up to reveal Maria hanging upside down in a frame of sorts, with two pyramid heads on opposite sides of her, holding spears. JAMES (yelling) Stop! Leave her alone!! Leave us both the hell alone! MARIA and JAMES cry out just before one of the pyramid heads stabs MARIA in the back of the head. JAMES falls to his knees below, holding out his hands. Close in on JAMES, hanging his head. JAMES I was weak. That's why I needed you… Needed someone to punish me for my sins… But that's all over now… I know the truth. Now it's time to end this. As JAMES speaks, the camera pans out to reveal that the pyramid heads are now standing on either side of JAMES. As he finishes speaking, they begin to walk toward him. Fight. INT. DARK HOTEL. An execution room. Sirens begin to go off, and the Pyramid heads move to the center of the room and impale themselves suddenly with their own spears. INT. DARK HOTEL. A long hallway. As JAMES walks down it, we can hear a conversation. JAMES (v/o) I, uh I brought you some flowers… MARY (v/o) Flowers? I don't want any damn flowers. Just go home already. JAMES (v/o) Mary, what are you saying? MARY (v/o) Look! I'm disgusting! I don't deserve flowers. Between the disease and the drugs, I look like a monster. Well what are you looking at? (yelling) Get the hell out of here. Leave me alone already! I'm no use to anyone. I'll be dead soon anyway. Maybe today, maybe tomorrow… It'd be easier if they could just kill me. But I guess the hospital is making a nice profit off me, they want to keep me alive… Are you still here? I told you to go! Are you deaf?! Don't come back! (Beat.) James… Wait… Please don't go… Stay with me. Don't leave me alone. (crying) I didn't mean what I said. Please, James… Tell me I'll be okay. Tell me I'm not going to die. Help me… ~~~~~~~ GAME ENDINGS ~~~~~~~ ++IN WATER++ EXT. DARK HOTEL. The top of an unusually large fire escape with no visible means of support. JAMES enters via grated stairs, a roof. There is a bed on the roof--Mary's bed. Mary/Maria is leaning out of a window, facing away from James. James approaches. JAMES Mary…? MARIA (turns to face JAMES, laughs) Wrong again. Mary's dead. You killed her. JAMES Maria.[?] Maria….I'm done with you. MARIA What do you mean? But I can be yours… I'll be here for you forever. And I'll never yell at you or make you feel bad. She touches his face, but he backs away. MARIA (yelling) That's what you wanted. JAMES Now I understand. The problem is…you're not Mary. MARIA No James. I won't let you! I'll never let you have your Mary back! MARIA begins to flicker so that she appears to be a cross of herself and the pyramid head, eventually turning into a bed-frame monster, but retaining her face. JAMES fights MARIA. MARIA falls to the ground moaning James' name. JAMES shoots/bludgeons MARIA to finish her off. INT.BEDROOM. MARY is lying on a bed and JAMES is seated at her side. JAMES Mary… MARY James… (coughs) JAMES Forgive me… MARY I told you that I wanted to die, James. I wanted the pain to end. JAMES That's why I did it, honey. I just couldn't watch you suffer. No, that's not the whole truth. You also said that you didn't want to die. The truth is… part of me hated you. For taking away my life… MARY You killed me and you're suffering for it. It's enough, James. (she hands him a letter, then starts to cough). JAMES Mary… (he takes her hand and holds it to his cheek) MARY James… MARY's hand goes limp and JAMES releases it. Beat. JAMES stands and picks MARY up in his arms. Slowly, he walks from the room with her. CUT TO: Black screen. Sound of a car door shutting. JAMES (v/o) Now I understand. The real reason I came to this town. Sound of car starting. JAMES (v/o) I wonder what was I afraid of? Without you, Mary, I've got nothing… Sound of car driving at high speed. Suddenly silence.
