Who has a site about the vibraphone? My name is Evan Shea. You should hear some music now. That's me on the vibes. I began drum lessons in 1979 at Lou Rose Music in Edison NJ, and mallet percussion and tympani lessons in 1985. I studied formally with several teachers until 1994. I graduated from Trenton State College. As part of my senior recital I proudly performed the "Concerto for Marimba" by Robert Kurka, a classic piece.
I used to love to chat on thevibe.net, a forum for vibraphone players. I'll have to get back to that. Great vibe players there. Go check it out.
Teaching is a challenging career and I love it. Since 1994 I've taught instrumental, general, and vocal music at different levels. I taught math, reading and science. I enjoyed the book, "Portraits in Melody" by A. Cirone. This book is a challenge and I recommend it to any serious percussionist. I love chamber music too. With fellow alumni, concerts including "Lift Off", "Brazilian Myths", "Whole Toy", "Intgrales" and many other stunning pieces were performed. Kudos to Mark Bencivengo and Todd Nichols who put those concerts together.
One of my favorite things has been playing in local theaters and community groups on drums or percussion for dozens different musical theater productions. I also enjoy playing the music of Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy, Lee Morgan and Miles Davis. In 2001 and 2002 I was playing in a 9 piece night-club/wedding band called "Road Scholars." That was great fun. In the other direction, with the Bay-Atlantic Symphony, the professional orchestra of southern New Jersey, I was lucky to play many great pieces of music under three different conductors. Jed Gaylin really deserves credit for bringing that group UP. I got to work with him too on West Side Story on vibraphone.
Jazz gigs? Several times I had a the pleasure playing for the Somers Point Jazz Festival. I am thankful I got to play with so many great musicians in south Jersey like the late Johnny Andrews. Tony Day, Keith Hollis, Andy Lalasis. I remember sitting in with George Mesterhazy in Cape May. Whew!
I love playing music. (PERIOD!)
Now I'm with "Arsenal." This band is a fantastic Classic Rock band. We play songs from circa 1976 to 1986. It's like medicine to make me feel 15 again. I put a couple videos on youtube under my name, "mrevanshea." I play 3 keyboards to keep up with all the sounds.
I don't know what's next but it will be more music.
This instrument is called the vibraphone.
