The Flyers kept their team storng by resigning free agent Rod Brind'Amour to a three-year contract.
July 15, 1998:
The Flyers signed veteran goaltender Ron Hextall to a contract extension through the '99-'00 season. Hextall lost his starting job on the team to new aquisition John Vanbiesbrouck, so Hextall will be kept on as backup goaltender.
Also on July 15th, the arena where the Flyers play, the CoreStates Center, changed its name to the First Union Center. The change will be active starting September 1st.
July 7, 1998:
The Flyers solved any problem they had in the net by signing All-Star goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck to a two-year contract, with an option for the '00-'01 season. The former Florida Panther is also a Vezina Trophy winner.
July 6, 1998:
The Flyers are building on their already large-enough team, this time by adding the strength of unrestricted free agent Marc Bureau. The former Montreal Canadien was signed to a three-year contract, and is expected to replace checking center Joel Otto, an unrestrected free agent whom the Flyers are not expected to resign.
June 27, 1998:
The Flyers traded the highest-scoring defenseman of all-time Paul Coffey to the Chicago Blackhawks for a fifth-round draft pick.
June 25, 1998:
The Flyers kept the rights to one of the greatest players alive, by getting Eric Lindros to sign an $8.5 million contract that will keep him in Philadelphia for at least one more season.
