The New Jersey Pinelands is vast forests of pine, oak and cedar that make the Pinelands the largest tract of open space on the mid-Atlantic coast. Shady cedar swamps are truly a magical place. Biologists ,hikers or just plain outdoor enthusiasts can search for the "rare curly grass fern" or hike through a forest of "pygmy" pines no taller 5'tall. Brackish streams fed by a huge underground aquifer system supply the marshes and bays of southern New Jersey with some of the cleanest water in the world. The Pinelands has the distintion of being our country's first National Reserve. In 1983, the Pinelands was designated a Biosphere Reserve by the U.S. Man and the Biosphere Program and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This designation means, simply, that the Pinelands is an example of the world's major ecosystem types.
The hundreds miles of hiking trails, 4X4 roads, and even paved roads provide the adventurer varying methods of discovery into the Pines, with as much challenge as one wants. Even the slow moving streams and rivers can take the outdoors person on a truly unique experience for a few hours or even a few days .
It's really quite a place, and it's right here in New Jersey the most urbanized state in this country!
