Later that evening, Betty unlocked the door to her room and went in. She wondered why it didn't feel as cozy as usual. Tonight it just felt empty and cold and too quiet. She wondered if she was coming down with the flu or something. She certainly didn't feel very well. All day she had felt run down and distracted. Maybe I should turn in early.

While fixing some warm milk, the phone rang. It was Victor calling from Washington DC. Their conversation was the same as usual, nice and normal and mostly about the station.

After she hung up, she hoped hearing from Victor would get her mind off the day's events. She took a sip of her now tepid milk then poured the rest in the sink and decided to just go to bed.

She climbed into bed and lay in the dark. She tried to think about Victor, but she kept remembering the eagerness in Scott's voice when he accepted Veronica's invitation to show her the town.

She forced herself to think about Victor. In the quiet darkness of her room, she was finally able to admit to herself that her feelings for Victor were changing. Well, maybe not changing. She still admired and respected him as much as ever, but she was beginning to understand that what she felt for him was not the kind of love a woman should feel for a man.

I guess I'm growing up.

She slept fitfully that night, tossing and turning and dreaming about being given a prized possession, only to have it taken away from her. She woke up and found tears on her face.
