WENN There is Trouble

The war was in progress and the men of WENN are contemplating enlisting. Mr. Foley tried but was rejected because of his hayfever and allergies. Jeff was also rejected because of injuries caused by the bombing of London. C.J enlisted, but Scott wasn't sure what to do. At that point in the war married men weren't drafted, but could enlist.

Scott and Betty had come back to WENN worried about the station, but it was o.k, with only some small mishaps. Nothing too serious. Of course, when things go well something big is bound to happen soon, but what?

======================================================

Betty was trying to write her scripts, but her mind kept wondering back to New York and the great time she had.

The silence didn’t last long. All of a suddenly the whole cast burst into the room. They were all talking at once.

Everyone, quiet! Now what's wrong?" asked Betty.

"Eugenia is very sick," wailed Mackie.

"Mr. Foley, go see if you can find a doctor. Everyone else settle down. It's probably nothing serious," said Betty.

"I don’t think so," murmured Gertie.

They all headed to Studio A where Eugenia was trying to play the organ but she was feeling too sick.

"I’m going to go get Scott and help Mr. Foley find a doctor," said Betty worriedly, "and let's continue with the broadcast, shall we?"

A couple of minutes later, Mr. Foley walked in with a doctor whose bag read Dr. Sherman. He checked Eugenia out, and turned around to tell the news. "Eugenia will be fine, but I’m afraid that..." he stopped when Betty and Scott entered the room, "that we will be quarantined. I’m going to have to stay, because I’ve never had this disease before. It is a rare German disease, but it doesn’t kill. So, let me introduce myself. I’m Dr. Dan Sherman, and please call me Dan." He turned towards Betty, who was staring at him with amazement and surprise. Dan returned the gaze as Scott got angry.

"Hi, you must be the doctor," said Scott, in an attempt to distract the medical examiner. It didn’t work.

Maple tried to step in when she saw that Scott wasn’t liking this. “I’m Maple LaMarsh, and this is Hilary Booth, Jeff Singer, Mackie Bloom, Gertie Reece, and Tom Eldridge." She read the names off, but he didn’t even seem to notice.

"And this is MRS. Betty SHERWOOD, AND I’M HER HUSBAND Scott SHERWOOD!!!!!!!!!" said Scott, trying to hold his temper. The worst part was Betty was staring back and didn’t even notice his statement.

"How do you do, Mrs. Sherwood?" asked Dan as he took her hand and kissed it. Betty ran out of the room, not knowing what to say or do. It was too hard to explain.

Scott walked into the office where Betty was waiting. He looked angry, but most of all it was hurt. "So, are you going to tell me what that was all about?" asked Scott.

"It wasn’t anything, Scott. I was just surprised to see him after all these years."

"After all these years?"

"Dan and I grew up together in Elkheart. We were friends at first, but in high school we thought it was more then that. We thought we were in love, but not true love like us. At the end of high school, he proposed and I accepted. We never did get married. We were going to hold off until we got done with college. Then he told me he was being transfered to New York to become a doctor. We wrote to each other less and less as time went by. When I won the writing contest to become an intern here I told him what happened and added that it was no use going on being engaged. If we still felt the same way later then maybe we could consider it again, but nothing happened. It was just a small town romance. We never thought we would go off and leave Elkheart and fall in love with someone else."

Scott just looked at her with a look she couldn’t decipher. "Why have you never told me this?"

"It was in the past, and I didn’t think he would ever show up in my life again. I saw him at home when I went to Elkheart Christmas and that was just a quick hello and good-bye."

Scott got up and left the room.

======================================================

Meanwhile in Studio A, Dan was explaining what had happened. He tried to convince them that it was all over and he had no intention of trying to get Betty back. Everyone could see that by the look on his face that it wasn’t out of his head.

"I'd better warn you that Scott has a bad jealousy streak," said Hilary Booth.

At that moment Scott walked in with fists clenched together.

"Scott, you’ll only make things worse if you hit him," said Mackie.

"Scott, please don’t," said Betty running into Studio A. She tried to stop him, but he pulled away.

"You leave my wife alone, or else!" exclaimed Scott, who then stormed out of the room with Betty right behind him. They walked into the Writer’s Room, and he started pacing.

Betty never saw Scott this mad or hurt, ever. He really loved her a lot to be jealous of something so small. "Scott, please settle down," said Betty, and he sat down. "First, you need to realize that Dan and I were all in the past even before I came here."

"It’s hard to believe that."

"It probably is, but I love you too much even to consider him anymore. Maybe there is a few things unsettled, and this could be the time to settle them."

"Like what?"

"A final good-bye, an ending."

"Is that all?"

"Yes, but maybe this will convince you more how much I love you.” She went over to him and bent down to kiss him. He took her in his arms as they shared a long passionate kiss. It was a kiss that went from the head to the toes.

"It’s working," said Scott, trying to catch his breath. He looked at her with a look of adoration and smiled that charming smile that could tame a lion.

There was a knock at the door, and Betty went to open it, and found Dan standing there. "I came to apologize for earlier. How about calling it a truce?" asked Dan.

"Truce," said Scott, shaking his hand. What Betty and Scott didn’t notice were the crossed fingers behind his back.

"I’ll leave you two alone. Dinner will be ready in a half-hour," said Dan, leaving.

"Where were we?" asked Scott, taking Betty in his arms.

"Right here," said Betty, leaning in for a kiss that soared through her body. "I never kissed Dan like that," Betty teased.

"You better not have!"

"But with Victor..."

"What?"

"Now that’s different. Time to get ready for dinner,” said Betty, rushing out of the room laugthing. Scott followed her, wondering how great that kiss was, and how he could top it.

======================================================

Later that night, there was a dance in Studio A. Everyone was dancing except for Dan. He stood in the corner watching Betty as she danced with Scott. He was going to ask her for the next dance. When the song ended, he went to Betty. "May I have the next dance?"

"Sure," said Betty. As the music began, Betty knew it was a mistake. Dan was holding her very close and the problem was that it didn’t feel bad.

"Betty, I’d like to talk to you alone. Meet me in five minutes in the Writer’s Room," whispered Dan in her ear as the song ended.

======================================================

"Dan, what is it?" asked Betty nervously.

"To get right to the point, I still love you," said Dan.

"But Dan, I’m married."

"That's not the most important thing right now, but do you still care for me?"

"I still care for you, but I love Scott a lot more then you or anybody else. I’m very happy."

"So you mean if I do this to you..." He leaned over and kissed her.

Betty pushed Dan away, but a feeling of fear came over her. Scott stood in the doorway and to say that he looked less than happy was a tremendous understatment. "Scott!" exclaimed Betty as he went out of the room and she raced after him.

She found him in his office, just staring out in space with no expression on his face. "Scott, that kiss meant nothing to him or to me. He was testing my love for you. I admit he still had some feelings for me, but that doesn’t change how I love you. I’ve been the happiest girl on Earth since I married you two months ago."

"Why should I believe that?"

"In marriage, you should trust each other or the marriage won’t work out. I know I’ve made a few mistakes, but I had a legitimate reason for what happened. If you don’t believe it, then I give up. If you want to be so stubborn that you ruin our marriage, that's up to you," exclaimed Betty as she ran out of the room crying.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scott sat there dumbfounded. His mind kept on repeating the whole scene in his head. How can Betty do that to me? She seemed so satisfied and happy with the marriage, so she turns around and does this. Dan was just somebody out of the past, and he didn’t have any right to push his way into their life. Was she right? Has this torn our marriage to shreds that can’t be fixed?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The rest of the gang didn’t quite know what to do or think about the whole situation. Betty and Scott weren’t even talking unless it was business. Nobody would talk to Dan but Eugenia, since she was sick.

Gertie went into the Writer’s Room, where Betty sat with tears streaming down her face. She headed over to her and gave her a comforting arm, Betty took it.

"I don’t know what’s wrong with me lately," Betty sobbed.

"It’s hard having your first major fight. You don’t know how to handle the situation. Betty, if you both really love each other then everything will work out, and I know you do," comforted Gertie.

"This isn't just a regular argument. He caught me in another man’s arms. It meant nothing. Dan just wanted to make sure there were no feelings left between us."

"He knows that, but he needs time to let it all sink in. You need to talk to him, or this may go on and on. It has been almost two weeks since this has happened."

"You’re right, but I don’t know what to say or do."

"First thing is to tell him you love him."

"I know that, but what about after that?"

"That would be up to him."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Maple was very worried about Scott, who'd been her friend for a long time. He rarely came out of the office unless he had to do something. He hadn’t shaved for a couple of days.

"Hi, Mapes," said Scott without his usual cheerfulness.

"Hi, Scott. I came to talk to you about you and Betty. You need to come out of this office and talk to her. Eugenia is almost better. What will you do after that?"

"If I have to, I’ll stay here!"

"Why are you being so stubborn about this? You still love Betty, don’t you? She loves you."

"Of course I still love Betty, but this isn't something you forget in a few days."

The only thing that'll probably save this situation is Betty finding out she was having a baby. He would be responsible, and make up, Maple thought to herself. None of the WENN staff were fighting. They were too worried about Scott and Betty.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dan reported the next morning that Eugenia was totally better, and everyone could go home anytime they wanted to. Everyone but Betty stayed there for the rest of the broadcasting day. Betty went home, since all she did those two weeks was type. When she arrived there was a telegram waiting for her.

"I have to get back to the station and arrange for a couple of weeks off," said Betty. When she got back she went straight to Scott’s office. She remembered back when Victor was still there. She hadn’t heard from him for a long time. Of course, where he was it was hard to write.

"Scott, I’m leaving," said Betty.

He just looked up, and stared at her. He was hoping it didn’t mean what it sounded like.

"I mean that I..." started Betty, but she had fainted after she handed him the telegram. It read that her father was dying.

"BettyBettyBetty," exclaimed Scott as someone walked in.

"What happened?" exclaimed Maple.

"She fainted," said Scott. Maple just looked up and hoped it meant what she thought it meant.

"She’s going away. Her father is dying. Maybe the shock caused it."

"Are you going with her?"

"I don’t think she wants me to," said Scott. "I’ll take her home when she comes to and send her off."
