"Well, Sis, I guess we finally get to be in the spotlight."
"It's an odd feeling. Too bad it had to be at this time. Of course, we are the only ones left to tell the story."
"Anne and I would like to tell you what happened to all the people of WENN. They all made a special impact on our life," Andy explained.
"It's so hard to believe that all of them are dead, even Mom, who was the youngest," added Anne.
"Kyle was the first one to die after Normandy. He died in a war prison camp just 2 weeks before it was liberated."
"They said they found the last letter that he got from Rita in his old barracks in the camp. People the Allied soldiers and reporters talked to also said that he carried it with him everywhere he went. He seemed to die peacefuly, knowing that he was going to heaven to see his beloved Rita."
"Lucky for Maple, Noah was able to come home only missing part of his left arm. He would never be the same man she had met Kyle and Rita's wedding." Anne turned another page of the photo album she and her brother had pulled onto her lap.
"Here's a picture of everyone at Mr. Eldridge's funeral. I think that was the last time they were all together. Remember, it was just a few months after WENN shut down," said Andy.
"His purpose was done, I guess. Without WENN he really had nothing left to live for."
"Everyone went their own ways. Gertie found a job as a hotel receptionist, but it didn't last very long. She started feeling very sick. She went to the doctor and was diagnosed with cancer."
"Gertie died a year later and almost everyone was there except for Mackie, who was in the middle of making a movie." Turning over another page of the photo album, Andy found some letters keepsake from Hilary Booth. "Even marrying Jeff and growing old (excuse me, seasoned) didn't make her change her last name. She would die in 1980. She was stubborn until the end."
"Also a fighter. Jeff was away for a few days when she got terminaly ill. No one could get hold of him, and she wasn't willing to die until she saw him one last time."
"Everyone was surprised by her will, which stated that she wanted the stone to be read 'Mrs. Hilary Singer'."
"Jeff would never be the same after her death, but he kept working hard. Other than Mom and Dad, the next one was the hardest on you, Andy."
"Mackie would die very shortly after Hilary," Andy murmured sadly. "It was amazing no matter how old he was, he kept on working until the day he died. He took every job he could get, and his last moment was in a radio station being interviewed about his work."
"Two of the greatest actors ever on radio were lost in the same week."
"It would take five more years until the next person would die, but again they came in a pair. They didn't die of old age or of an illness. They were hit by a drunk driver on a highway outside of Pittsburgh."
"Noah and Maple always wanted to die together, and they got their wish."
"Maple was such a wonderful person, and Noah was just as great. They were the perfect couple."
"It was very hard on Dad to lose his best friend in such a horrible way. They were killed instantly, but even then their bodies were totally mangled."
"Mr. Foley would die two years later. Eugenia was heart broken, but her children and grandchildren were very helpful."
"Even in death, Mr. Foley got the last word. He left a recording of what he wanted to say to his friends and family. It was his way of saying good - bye and thank you."
"Jeff passed away a few months later. He was happy and satisfied in death. He knew he would be going to his dear Hilary and spar with her forever."
"Mom and Dad would spend their last years before Dad's death traveling the world, but on one of the trips to England, he got very sick, and they went straight home. He would die a few days later."
"Mom organized all their pictures and spent lots of time with her family."
"Before Mom died, she was able to go to her good friend and last of the WENN people to survive, Eugenia's, funeral. Mom was totally heartbroken that she was the only one left. All of her real good friends were gone, and so was her husband."
"Today at the radio station WENN we would like to remember all these members we have mentioned with a special good - bye. Mother wanted to be here today, but as some of you may now she passed yesterday afternoon of a heart attack. We would like to commerate her and all her friends who died before her, and those who died in the Battle of Normandy. Today, as many of you know, is the 50th anniversary of the beginning of that battle."
"We would like to read you a letter written by Mr. Eldridge's wife just before she died to him, but it fits all of them, and all of us who have lost someone close to our hearts. Mom read this over and over again after Dad's death. In memory of them we would like to read it to you," Scott Jr. said, and then he continued. "Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped into the next room, and I am I and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Speak to me in the easy way that you always used, laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together, let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Life means all that it ever meant; there's absolute unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind, because I'm out of sight? I am waiting for you, somewhere very near, just around the corner. All is well."
The younger man wiped a tear, nodded at his siblings, and went on. "Before we sign off tonight, we would like to play a recording of Eugenia singing the song 'Remember When'."
Remember you,
Remember me,
And all those dreams come true
That never came to be.
The foggy night of distant lights
Now shine so clearly
And I can hear your voice
As if you're mine and near me
What might have been
Can live again;
I'll meet you then
If you remember wenn.
Remember when.
