Sibling Rivarly

by Rachal Monniger

It was an average day at WENN as Hilary and Scott performed Bedside Manor to the rather small, yet faithful group of listeners who kept their dials tuned into the airwaves of the small station.

The front door in the waiting room near the front of WENN opened, and in came a beautiful young woman with dark hair.

"Hello," said Gertie cordially. "How may I help you?"

"Hi," said the woman. "My name is Eloise. Do you know where I can find Scott Sherwood?"

"I'm afraid he's on the air right now," said Gertie. "He should be off in another couple of minutes. Would you care to wait?"

"Sure," said Eloise as she sat down in one of the chairs.

"Gertie!" called Betty Roberts as she flew down the hall to the switchboard. "Has Mr. Medwick called yet?"

"No, not yet," replied Gertie.

"Oh, good!" she sighed. "I was afraid I'd missed his call." She turned and saw Eloise in the waiting room. "May I help you?" she asked, smiling warmly.

"I'll bet you're Betty." said Eloise, getting up and extending her right hand.

"Why, yes I am." said Betty, shaking Eloise's hand, "And you are...?"

"Eloise. Eloise Sherwood."

"Sherwood?"

"Indeed. Scott's my brother. He's told me so much about this station...and even more about you," she added a quick wink.

"Ah," said Betty, trying to keep the warm smile from leaving her face. "Now that I look closer, there is a family resemblance."

"El!" Scott called from the corridor, "What are you doing here?" Scott hugged Eloise.

"Can't I just pay a little visit to my brother? How are ya, Scotty boy?"

"Doing good, how about you?"

"I can't hold it in any longer...I'm getting married!"

"What?" Scott's face broke out in a smile, "Who? What? When? Where? Why?"

"Me and Walter Sheldon, a wedding, of course, two weeks from now, in our hometown, because I love him!"

"Wow! Congratulations, sis!"

"Of course you're invited to the wedding. Can you make it?"

"Well, I'll have to consult my boss." He turned to Betty. "Can I make it?"

"I think we can arrange to give you a few days off," Betty said with a smile.

"Swell. Come on, Ellie, I'll give you the Grand Tour."

Scott and Eloise walked down the hall, and as Betty saw them, she realized that perhaps Scott Sherwood really did have a heart. She never saw him look so happy.

"This is the hall," said Scott.

"I can see that," laughed Eloise.

Just then Mackie and Hilary came out from the studio, fighting over how she should be introduced for the next show.

"I insist on being MISS HILARY BOOTH!! Not just Hilary!"

"Hilary, it's supposed to be an INFORMAL show. Like you know all of the audience personally, like you're their best friend."

Before Hilary could come up with one of her brilliant comebacks, Scott broke in. "Mackie! Hilary! I'd like you to meet my little sister, Eloise."

Turning from Hyde to Jekyll, Hilary daintily offered her hand and spoke in a soft and ladylike voice. "How do you do? I, of course, am Miss Hilary Booth."

"Oh, Miss Booth!" fawned Eloise, "The great Broadway actress! Oh, I just ADORE you!"

Delighted, Hilary turned to Scott and said, "Well, my my, I'm pleased see that not the entire Sherwood clan is plagued with bad taste." Turning back to Eloise she said, "I am deeply honored to meet yet another of my many, many, many fans. But, alas, I must go back on the air. Ta ta!" She whisped herself back into the studio.

"Well, Scott," said Eloise, "You're right. A little flattery goes a long way with her."

"Never fails," replied Scott. "Oh, and this is Mackie Bloom."

"The Man of a Thousand voices, I presume," said Eloise.

"Very much so indeed," chuckled Mackie. "Well, Sherwood, now I see who got the good looks in your family."

"Oh, I know!" exclaimed Eloise, pinching Scott's cheek, "Isn't he so cute?"

"Come on, El!" complained Scott, turning red.

Mackie laughed as he entered the studio. A split second later, Maple exited the same room.

"Hiya, Scotty!" Maple greeted them, "And who is this?"

"Maple LaMarsh, I'd like you to meet my sister, Eloise."

"Hi, Eloise. For a minute there I thought Scotty had found another gal. Well, I don't mean to be so brief, but I've gotta do a commercial. Fun, fun. Nice meeting ya!"

"Same here," replied Eloise. Maple walked back into the studio. "OK, Scotty boy," said Eloise, "What did she mean by ANOTHER gal? You never mentioned any girlfriend."

"Well..." hesitated Scott, "I don't really have a girlfriend. I just..."

"I'll bet it's Betty!" exclaimed Eloise, "I could tell from a mile away. The way you flirted with her. Boy, oh boy! Scott Sherwood is in love! And with a nice gal, what more can you ask for!"

"Shut up, El!" shushed Scott. "Do you want the whole world to hear you?"

"Oh, come on, Scotty. Wow. Perhaps your own wedding isn't too far off, eh?" She gave him a playful poke in the rib.

"I wish. It'll never happen. I just can't seem to bring myself to tell her how I feel. After all, Betty's got class. Something us Sherwoods seem to have a lack of."

"We do not lack class, Scott, just scruples. It's the Sherwood tradition. I don't know. You were always the blackest of the black sheep in our family, but you've really change since I last saw you. I think WENN has done you some good. You're not quite as shiftless as you used to be."

"You should have seen me when I was Station Manager."

"I'm glad I didn't. Oh, will you look at the time. I've got a bus to catch. Your invitation is in the mail, big brother. See you there."

"OK, El."

"Bye, Scotty."

"Bye. Oh, and El?"

"Yeah?"

"I love you."

"I love you, too, big brother. Oh, and I think you should tell some one else that you love her, don't you agree?" She smiled and left.

"I agree, sis. I agree."
