The kookiest, spookiest night of the year is almost here.
Yup, it's Halloween, and that means we can look forward to having
fun carving pumpkins, dressing up in totally outrageous costumes
and trick-or-treating for tons of yummy candy. But look out -
Halloween is also the one time of the year for ghosts, goblins
and other ghastly creatures that are guaranteed to scare many
Boppers out of their socks! With that in mind, we think it's the
perfect time to ask *NSync, those Orlando, Florida-based fellas
behind the funky singles "Tearin' Up My Heart" and
"I Want You Back" from their 1998 self-titled debut
album, to 'fess up their fears and share what scares them. Here's
what Lance Bass, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick, and
Justin Timberlake have to say.
Justin admits that when he was a tiny tyke growing up in Memphis,
Tennessee, he was totally afraid of monsters under his bed.
"I saw the movie Gremlins and I thought that gremlins lived
under my bed," the 17-year-old cutie recalls. "I
remember when I was like 4 or 5 I had to turn the light switch
off before I got into bed. So I'd turn the light off and run for
my bed. About six feet before I'd get there, I'd leap as far as I
could and get on the bed. I always had this fear of having this
gremlin's arm reach out from under the ned and grab my leg.
Fortunately, Justin has long since outgrown his fear of imaginary
creatures hiding out under his bed and waiting to gobble him up.
But that doesn't mean that he isn't afraid of anything else these
days. In fact, he confesses that he's totally creeped out by
snakes, spiders and sharks. "I'm really frightened of
sharks." he tells BOP. "I mean, the stories I hear
about sharks attacking people and the fact that it could actually
happen to me is scary! And spiders and snakes, they gross me out,
I think its the S's. Snakes, sharks and spiders.
Chris' tummy does flip-flops at the idea of driving to the top of
a mountain to check out the view or looking out a window high in
a skyscraper. However, aside from his fear of heights, Chris
insists that he isn't scared of anything - not even horror
movies! "I was actually a big horror movie buff when I was a
kid," he proudly relates. "I watched Friday The 13th at
this country house all by myself. I was 10 years old and nobody
was there. I was trying to scare myself, but it didn't
work."
However, when it comes to scaring JC, there's just one thing in
the world that turns his knees to Jell-o. "Man, I'll tell
you, I'm terrified of needles," the 22-year-old sweetie says
with a shudder. In fact, JC was majorly upset when he found out
that he and his groupmates had to get three shots before
traveling to South Africa for a concert not too long ago. "I
was freaking out," he admits. JC put off going to the
doctor's office to get shorts for a week before his four
groupmates finally dragged him there. "[The nurse] came into
the room and I thought it was shot time," he says
sheepishly. "She broke out this thing, and I didn't know
what it was. I thought it was the shot, so I just yelled and ran
out the door. The other guys started laughing so hard. They were
like, 'Come back, it's just the ear thermometer!' I was so
humiliated. But, needles invading yout body, I don't like
it!"
Luckily, Lance has never felt the nervous butterflies in his
tummy that JC gets whenever he's around needles. That's because
this calm and collected cutie isn't afraid of anything! Not
spiders and other creepy critters. Not ghostly creatures hiding
in his closet. Not even deadly stalkers like the ones in this
summer's H20. The 19-year-old singer has never been bothered by
any of these things. In fact, he has fun watching horror movies
that leave many Boppers shivering with fear for days. "I
always loved scary movies!" he enthuses. Lance isn't
pretending to be totally fearless in order to impress people.
He's simply one of those easygoing guys who doesn't let anything
bother him - including scary things. The Southern sweetie thinks
his laid-back 'tude comes from growing up in safe, friendly
Laurel, Mississippi. "I lived in a small town where you
didn't have to keep your doors locked and you didn't have to
worry about murders, things like that," Lance explains.
"As a kid, I was very secure. I wasn't scared of
anything."
Joey feels the same way as Lance. Although he didn't grow up in a
super-safe small town like Lance, the Brooklyn, New York native
tells us that he's never been afraid of anything either.
"What was I ever afraid of?" asks the 21-year-old city
guy. "I've never really had a lot of fears. I don't know
why." It could be that Joey avoids getting the heeby-geebies
because he shares Lance's carefree approach to life. As Chris
tells BOP, "Joey is a really happy-go-lucky guy."
However, while chatting with us about fears, Joey realized that
there is one thing that definately does make him feel scared.
"Some people are afraid of spiders or snakes or whatever,
but I'm not really afraid of that stuff," he says. "I'm
not afraid of snakes, but if it bit me or something like that?
Hmmm. I guess I am afraid of something biting me." Let's
hope he and all his groupmates don't bump into any vampires this
Halloween!
