HabitatNative to the Northern areas of Europe. Prefers rich soils, and/or disturbed soils, such as forests with fallen trees, boundries such as streams and roads, and open areas such as trails or agricultural areas.
Max. HeightFlowering plants produce stems that range from 70cm to 1m tall.
Breeding PeriodSeedlings emerge from February to early March, generating basal rosettes by midsummer. The next summer they generate flower stalks and set seed.
Life Expectancy2 years. The plant dies after producing seed in its second summer.
Function in the EcosystemInvasive plant/ Weed. Will move into an area and strangle off native species in process of reproducing.
RangeWorldwide base, found most readily in the United States in the New England area, as well as midwestern states. Garlic mustard has established populations as far west as Dakota, and as far south as Tennessee and North Carolina.
