Niniane's Place in Fang the Gnome Niniane in Fang the Gnome and King of the Sceptr'd Isle by Michael Coney
Fang the Gnome
In both Fang the Gnome and King of the Scepter'd Isle Niniane goes by Nyneve
In Fang the Gnome, there is this powerful sorceress named Avalona who is a dedo, or one of five fingers of some great God. Avalona can, thus, sense the future and alter it so that it goes along the right paths (of which she can see hundreds of). Her son is Merlin, and her disciple, Nyneve. The two of them can travel to different times and planes and alter the future as well, particularly one that is Arthurian. They also run into a large number of Gnomes (hence the title Fang the Gnome and get to know various Arthurian characters both in their world and in the Arthurian plane. It's very weird, but I remember enjoying it.
King of the Scepter'd Isle
This book picks up where Fang the Gnome left off. This one stays somewhat more in the Arthurian world and Arthur and Nyneve are some of the main characters, and, as often happens when a female and a male character are main characters, the two become lovers. (Strangely, at least in my opinion, this is not as unusual as it might seem...Arthur, Niniane? Who'd have guessed?) Morgan le Fey is the main villian here who wants to split the happentracks, or tracks of time, open, and only Nyneve, now a Dedo, can prevent her. The gnomes join forces with them, more information about the Dedos is given, and for the life of me, I can't remember what happened to Merlin.
