Niniane's Place in The Winter King
Niniane in The Winter King by Bernard Cornwell

This is an interesting, although rather gritty Arthurian story. It's historical (meaning that the author tries to make the story go along lines that might actually have happened) and works a lot better than most of those that do. It's gory in places, but not bad otherwise. Niniane is called Nimue and is an obsessed follower and lover of Merlin who is well...deranged, needless to say. The entire story is told through the eyes of one of Arthur's spearmen who is remarkably normal, considering the people who he's around. He vows to protect Nimue, which gives her a fairly large part, although she, as a renegade follower of the drudic ways, is none to savory between her willingness to sacrifice humans and her less than tidy personal habits.

Copyright: 1996...there are at least two others, though, although I don't seem to be remembering the names very well.
