Niniane's Place in Merlin's Wood by Robert Holdstock
Niniane in Merlin's Wood

This story takes place in the modern era in an enchanted wood. A modern couple end up getting twisted up into the Merlin story. Niniane (Vivian in this story) is heard about in "flashbacks" where she, a nearly immortal enchantress, becomes Merlin's lover and tries to pry from him all of the secrets of everything. She's beautiful and spends a good portion of her time in the shape of a bird. Interstingly enough, as she's aging and the Merlin character isn't, in this story, she ends up being a moderately old woman while Merlin still looks like a young man. Merlin ends up getting rid of all of his powers so that she doesn't get them, in this story, which feels awfully unfair to all of those of us who love Vivian/Niniane. ; )
