Hot Topic with Jay

View the interview here. (Ryan, Paige, and Bobby follow)

DAN: This is Dan from Hot Topic dot com, and we are here with Jay from Orgy. How are you doing today?

JAY: Good, man. How you doing?

DAN: Good. So, what brings you over, up to NAMM, today?

JAY: You know, I have to deal with a couple of microphone things, and some computer stuff, and just your nerdy type stuff, you know.

DAN: The nerdy type?

JAY: And guitars, of course. Yeah, you know.

DAN: And all the MIDI instruments you can handle?

JAY: Exactly.

DAN: Exactly.

JAY: Too much MIDI.

DAN: So, what’s going on with the band right now. You guys getting ready to tour?

JAY: Yeah, we’re getting ready to go to rehearsals, to start our headlining tour on February 18th.

DAN: Really?

JAY: And then we go out with Papa Roach in March sometime.

DAN: That’s awesome. What, how are you feeling about the record and everything right now?

JAY: Yeah, it’s doing, it’s doing really good. It went gold a few weeks back.

DAN: Did it?

JAY: And, you know, we haven’t even gotten to the second single yet, and that’s gonna be Opticon, and that comes out January 30th.

DAN: Have you guys filmed the video, already?

JAY: No, we haven’t yet. We’re gonna, we’re gonna wait, wait a bit, feel it out, 'cause we wanna, we’re a little torn between which direction we wanna go with this one.

DAN: So, I know that the album was delayed a little bit, because of stuff coming on Napster.

JAY: Yeah.

DAN: How did you feel about that, personally?

JAY: Napster’s cool. You know, I mean, I don’t really have, like, a problem with it. I think it kinda hit us harder than a lot of other bands, because, because a lot of our fans would be more interested in, like, you know, kinda technical stuff. I don’t know why, but it just seems that, like, you know, there was a lot of stuff with that Napster thing. But, I don’t, you know, it doesn’t bother me. The record’s doing fine, and I’m happy the kids get to hear the music, and that’s what I did this for. So --

DAN: Actually, your record made me, your record gave me the opinion, and I think that, really, when the album comes out on Napster first, kids just hear it and wanna buy it even more.

JAY: Yeah.

DAN: And I base that opinion on the Orgy record, because the Orgy record was number one at Hot Topic for two weeks.

JAY: Oh, right.

DAN: So, and it was huge on Napster, too.

JAY: Thank you, very much.

DAN: How do you guys, how are you feeling about the Papa Roach tour? Is Papa Roach somebody that you guys have been hanging out with? 'Cause you guys always have, like, great relationships with other bands, friends with everybody.

JAY: Yeah, they’re really cool guys. They, my partner, Jay Baumgardner, he, he owns a recording studio, and we have a record label together, and he did the record for Papa Roach, and that’s how I met those guys.

DAN: What’s the label called?

JAY: Tentatively, it’s called Division One. I just signed my first artist, Danny Boy, that used to be in House of Pain, has a new project called Ex-Supermodels.

DAN: That’s a drum and bass, or is it electronica kinda thing?

JAY: It’s, it’s kinda, it’s kinda, yes. It’s electronic. It’s like if DMX and Crystal Method, like, had, like a, you know, a pseudo-abortion baby, I don’t know, something like that.

DAN: What else is out there, like, any local L.A. bands that are, you know, kinda tickling your fancy at the point, right now. Or --

JAY: As far as new?

DAN: Yeah, new stuff, unsigned bands, or anything?

JAY: Definitely, Deadsy, you know, of course, is like, a, you know, played a little bit on the, on the first version of the record, loved the music. It’s really cool, good stuff to listen to.

DAN: Deadsy’s great.

JAY: Yeah, they’re great. And, let me see, who else is really good, coming out. I’m looking forward to the Starts record that Josh did, and who else -- I don’t know, I’m really into, like, a lot of the drum and bass stuff, and all that.

DAN: Is that what you’re listening to, right now?

JAY: Yeah, I listen to a lot of that.

DAN: Any, any artists that you can name?

JAY: Enforcer is really good, F-111. Anybody re-mixing the new single that’s coming out?

JAY: Yeah, I want my friend to do it. And, you know, 'cause I don’t really do them myself, and a lot of my friends are really great at re-mixing and stuff. So, I want Epic from Crazy town to do one, I want Toddy from Dead Girls Corps to do one, and, and then, I’m doing mad remixes right now, too.

DAN: Are you really?

JAY: So, yeah.

DAN: What are you working on?

JAY: I’m doing one for Crazy Town, which will be their next single, Revolving Door. What else am I doing? I got asked to do a couple of things, like, a Lincoln Park one. But I’m looking, I, I may do one for an English artist called -- I can’t think of the guy’s name. I just found out about this, like, twenty minutes ago, Sounds something, S, I don’t know, Sounds something.

DAN: Do you do them all at home? Do you have your own home studio set up?

JAY: Yeah, we do. I have a big, huge Pro Tools rig, and all that stuff.

DAN:Right on. All right, man. Thank you very much.

JAY: All right.

DAN: Thanks for taking the time.

JAY: All right. Bye, you guys.
