SEPTEMBER 2000 NEWSLETTER VOL. X #9

Entertainment this month features Tony Chando.

TIME to pick out your pumpkins, people, and dig out the sweaters, for old man winter can't be too far off. Gosh!, we even had mornings in the thirties already. Please attend the September meeting of PRRH to be held at the ALPHA UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH on Wednesday night September 27 at 7:30PM. Refreshments will be served and entertainment this month will feature the work of Tony Chando.

Volunteer Work Report by Ed Beers:
In June, sixteen volunteers contributed 182 man hours. These included three members of the North Jersey Electric Railroaders on full size trackwork. Rick Glosser cut weeds on both sides of the track. Matt and Steve Winter and Jim Mack Have been manning the museum building on Sundays. The remainder of the hours were spent on laying and ballasting the Centerville & Southwestern. In July, PRRH volunteered 211 man hours. These included 14 members on projects like C&S tracklaying, full size trackwork, weed wacking, and staffing the museum on Sundays, Eight non members contributed 84 hours on full size trackwork and the X-29 boxcar move with Anthracite along with the cooperation of our own men on that project. This included Joe Maddock and Jeff Cheu.

In news this month, a loyal group of volunteers is progressing steadily on rebuilding the Centerville & Southwestern in the effort to have the line available for use during the September 30 Friends Open House. The enginehouse construction has resumed and the doors are being completed at this time. Full size trackwork is continuing with the help of the North Jersey Electric Railroaders.

We wish to acknowledge our thanks to Stroebers Lumber for the donation of wood to secure the foundation of the enginehouse. Also to Dominick Impeciata, my friend, for giving us two filing cabinets and some retail shelving for the museum gift shop. We also thank member Bill Pensyl for donating a copy machine for the club's use.

Our PRRH first annual picnic is now history and the 23 members and their families that partook of this activity are well aware of the success of our first venture in the art of merrymaking. Sunshine and warm temperatures were the rule of the day along with a cool breeze. Plenty of food made the tummies full and Norfolk Southern made the day exciting for all observers with a full plate of trains. Intermodal, autorack, coal and merchandise trains, eight in all, along with an evening runby of a mule drawn canal boat made this day one to remember. Our thanks go out to Ed Meyers for all his planning work and cooking and serving the hungry crowd. Also thank you to Meg Carpenito for helping Ed serve the delicious food prepared by our members families. Also to activities director Bill Pensyl for some really fun filled activities that kept everyone hopping and laughing. Activities included quoates, balloon tossing, and a very difficult scavenger hunt. A good day was had by all.

Finally, the welcome mat is extended to new member Francis Hudock.

We hope to see you all at the meeting. Drive carefully.
Paul Carpenito
