Hulk #7

Written by: John Byrne

Penciled by: Ron Garney

Summary/Review written by: Joseph B Canganelli

Summary:

This issue picks up right were the last one left off, with Dr. Bruce Banner falling into the huge gaping maw of a gigantic vegetable. He is saved at the last possible second by the Vision. He, and the rest of the Avengers have been looking for the Hulk, ever since he demolished the air plane three issues ago. (Captain America is not among the Avengers featured in this issue, since he was busy in Wakanda, getting the Klaw to help him put his shield back together! WOOHOO!) Iron Man broadcasts a neutralizing wavelength, in order to cause the plant clones to revert to their original moss-like state. With the psychic energy of the plant gone, Banner transforms in to the Hulk, and proceeds to go ballistic. He battles the Avengers, until the huge plant that Banner was thrown into earlier, come back for a second round with the Hulk. While the Hulk and the Plant swap swings, Wanda discovers that Candler has become some crazed head of lettuce, who runs off into the swamp, in to the waiting arms of the Man-Thing, who makes Candler burst into flame. As the Avengers attempt to figure out what has transpired and where the Hulk got to, we learn that the Man-Thing is a plant clone, just like Betty and Candler were. This issue ends with Wolverine telling the Hulk that he is here to kick his butt.

Review:

I was disappointed by the fact that I did not hate this issue as much as the previous six issues. I will go on record as saying that this is the best issue since the launch of the new series, not only because it is Byrne’s last (even though that is part of the reason), but also because there are some good parts in this book. Admittedly, I think the entire plant/clone/dead people story line was a bit ridiculous and at times confusing, but for the most part this issue was good because things actually happened, as usual the art was fantastic and the ending was cool.

There is always the possibility that I am a moron, but I just did not understand what this Candler guy was trying to prove in the first place. I never understood his motivation and was even more confused by his actions at the end of the story. I was also slightly confused by the entire Man-Thing thing. I mean, was he real or another plant clone like Betty. If he is a plant clone, then the real Man-Thing must be dead, right?

In this issue, we are treated to actual Super-Heroes, Ron Garney style. This is the first issue, that Garney has been given the chance to draw huge super-powered people trying to beat the crap out of one another. Garney’s art is incredible; there are wonderful splash pages though out the book and nearly every page is filled with action. I can’t wait until issues 9-11,since Garney is co-scripting. I am sure that those issues will be visually stunning and action packed, but then again, maybe that isn’t what he wants to do. However those issues turn out, I will be pleased to see one of the best artists in the industry, drawing exactly what he wants to. Again, he made this issue.

The way that Wolverine shows up out of no where, verbally abusing the Hulk is more enough to made me want run right out and but the next issue, until I remembered that it won’t be out until about Sept 20th. Of course the real reason that I am buying the next issue is named Erik Larsen. Please do not misunderstand me, I think that it will be real cool to see Garney write this book for a few issues, but I would LOVE to see Larsen write the book on a monthly basis.

Banner is stuck being the Hulk.
