DON'T ASK ALEX
interview by Mike
SP:How long has the band been together?
DAA: about 2 years, a little more...
SP:How what members are there and how did u meet?
DAA: Atom: There's 9 of us. Well, the band all got started when.Andy and I decided to put a band together one day in our architecture class, and someone over heard us. He said, "Ska? I know a kid who is onto that." Andy met this kid. He is Phil, the guy who sings lead for us...when he is not away at school....
SP: what where some your biggest shows and what are some other big bands you've played with?
DAA: ATom: Less Than Jake, Mephiskapheles, New York Ska Jazz Ensemble, Inspecter 7, Thumper, Ruder THan You, Skavoovie and the Epitones, and a bunch of other great bands...I think the biggest show we ever played, in terms of bands, was down at Trenton State last April...It was with the NYSJE, The Smoothes, Ruder THan You, The Insteps, and Mephiskapheles... I think that is it... Randy:...I don't know, I wasn't in the band...
Atom:...oh yeah...sorry....
SP:Who came up with the name and how?
DAA: Randy: Phil asked a guy standing outside of a liquor store to buy him alcohol, it turns out he was an undercover cop named Alex. So you see why you shouldn't ask Alex...
SP: What other bands do you like? Local and big
DAA: Randy: Spring Heeled Jack, Taxicab Samurais, Siren 6, One4One, Jimmy Eat World, Squirtgun, Mustard Plug, A lot of mixed punk, ska, and Hardcore....
ATom: Ska? the Scofflaws and Let's Go Bowling are my fav's...outside of that, it is The Smiths and Morrissey that I love the most. I am a big fan of British pop music, you know, Radiohead, Pulp, Blur, Menswear, but my tastes go from techno, to swing and jazz. But I can't say I am a fan of hardcore, or punk for that matter. Just doesn't do much for me. Don't get me wrong, especially for anyone who is in a Punk or hardcore band, it just isn't my taste....
what's Phil lookin at? SP:what are your major inspirations? (musical and non musical)
DAA: Randy: to see people dance to our music...
Atom: yeah...i'd have to agree with that
SP: what do u think of this big "ska boom" happening with all these new sell out bands ?
DAA: Atom: i dont really like getting caught up in that. I mean, if a band makes it big, good for them...not saying that I would sell out, not saying that i wouldn't...I just don't like labeling bands sellouts, it isn't fair to them...
Randy: Making money for playing good music? I don't see anything wrong with that.
Randy & Atom: As long as a band doesn't change its style, then what is wrong with making money and getting played on MTV??? If we had the chance to have OUT THE DOOR played on MTV 24 hours a day, we would do it in a heartbeat....
SP: what do u think of bands like reel big fish, and less than jake?
DAA: Randy: I love Reel Big Fish...
Atom: I never got into RBF...no real reason, just didn't. LTJ? I still dig em. I don't put that CD in much anymore, and I don't have anything but their first album, but i would still go to see them...they put on a good show....
SP: what can we expect coming from DAA in the future?
DAA: Randy & Atom: Well, our 7' is due out in March, we are just waiting for it to be pressed. We signed with Rude Girl Records not too long ago. We have a deal to put out a CD, which we should start recording this spring...We are beginning to plan a summer tour, we will be playing a shit load of shows all over the place...Long term? who knows...I hear the Bosstones are playing the ESPN Espy awards this year...
