SHOW REVIEWS
Skater's World
December 31, 1997. Cost= $18.

Originally the bands playing were supposed to be The Toasters, Jim Slim and the Midget Tossers, The Offbeats, Right Turn Eddie, and Plan  Project But some problems arose. About two weeks before the Toasters cancelled and were replaced by The New York Ska Jazz Ensemble. Also, Jim Slim cancelled. They were replaced by Edna's Goldfish. Highstrung was also added. For the beginning of the show Plan A opened! I can't believe that Plan A Project opened. They played awesome, and after them Highstrung played. I have nothing against Highstrung, I have just heard them too many times. The Offbeats were next, and as usual they played great. Followed by Right Turn Eddie, Edna's Goldfish, and The New York Ska Jazz Ensemble. All the bands played great. The show it's self wasn't that good though. You see half way through people started leaving. Also, by the end of the night no one was dancing because they were tired. Plus they were pretty pissed off at The Ska Jazz Ensemble. Skater's World set up a stage for the bands where they usually do, but a totally different one for The Ska Jazz Ensemble. The night would of went a lot better if the bands rotated the stages. Like if when one band was playing the other sets up, and when they are playing an other sets up. Oh well, it doesn't really matter. Still the music was great, and all most everybody who was there had fun.
Maxwell's

This show started off with a band called Racketball from Rhode Island. They play kind of a faster ska that has a unique, but good, sound to it. Regardless of the music, they still put on a good show. Mean: they don't just stand there and play; they dance around and really get into the music, which shows a good kind of spirit and a love for the music. They have one great trombone player, guitar, bass, drums, and a sax. After Racketballs came the Derengers. The one thing that stinks in my mind about them is the barritone sax. It totally filled in all the blank spaces that would normally bring out the bad points in a song. Then Metro Stylee came on. They were GREAT. They a pichillo trumpet play, and two sax players (one of which was really hot. They're singer was a girl so it gave you a change of pace from the normal singer. After Metro Stylee was Edna's Goldfish, and EVERYONE there got out there dancing. They REALLY got the crowd going. There's not much to say about Edna's Goldfish except, THEY ARE AWESOME!! After Edna's Goldfish was the Pilfers and they got the crowd going even more than Edna's Goldfish. They have a great classic 2Tone sound and obvious talent. I guess that's why so many people like em, but we had to leave early so we didn't get to see em :( -Mike M
