Of the 21 pups born to the Druid Peak pack last April, amazingly 20 have survived their most crucial months. 11 of the pups are black and 9 are gray. It is now a fact that the pack did indeed raise all the pups born to deceased Alpha female #40. It is not known for certain exactly how many pups #40 had, but the estimate is still possibly up to 10. The other pups were born to female #42 and female #106. Female #103, who was originally thought to have given birth also, apparently did not have a litter. Former Beta female #42 is the new Alpha of the pack and female #105 is believed to be the new Beta. The Druid Peak pack now consists of 27 members and is the largest pack in all of Yellowstone, Idaho, Wyoming, and Northern Montana. The 27 members of the pack include the 20 pups, now six months old, 6 adults, and 1 male yearling who is affectionately known as "Saddleback" due to his unique color pattern. The 6 adults are Alpha male #21, Alpha female #42, Beta female #105, female #103, female #106, and former member #107 who had dispersed from the pack in late 1998 and just recently resurfaced. No one has any idea where #107 has been for the past two years and his unexpected return in late August/early September came as a real surprise to everyone. But with 20 hungry pups to feed, and the next few months being the leanest in terms of easy prey, the return of this former member is most certainly welcomed and needed. There is a story about the Druid Peak pack and the pups on the Discovery.com website. And as you will see from the story, the survival of 20 of the 21 pups to date was totally unexpected and is a miracle in itself. Click Here to read this fascinating update on the pack.
