Project Set-up

Your Journal

*For this project you will need a journal. You can use a black and white speckled composition  book, a thin spiral notebook or ask your teacher for other suggestions. You might want to decorate the cover of your journal to reflect the content of the project.

*You will record all the data that you collect, conclusions that you make and creative writing activities that you do in your journal. You will have to graph some of the data that you collect so you should create a tab and reserve a section of your journal for your graphs. You can paste graph paper into the journal.

*Your teacher will check your journal several times during the project and will collect it at the end. Make sure that your journal is neat and complete, it is evidence of your hard work. Check with your teacher for more specific guidelines.

*Because your journal is evidence of the hard work you have done, it will be one of the things you and your teacher will use to assess whether or not you have become a survival expert. Together, you will also pay attention to how well you work with your classmates. You should work with your teacher to develop specific expectations.

Opening Journal Entry

As soon as you get your journal, get started right away by responding to the following questions:

  1. You have to prepare for your journey. What supplies do you think you will need to bring? Revisit the project description on the homepage for guidance.
  2. What kind of clothing and personal belongings do you think you should bring? Be selective, you can only bring as much as you can carry.
  3. What do you think the weather will be like? Think about what the weather is like outside right now.
  4. Given the distance of your journey, how long do you think the journey will take?
Share your responses with other class members. Once your journey is over, you will revisit this entry; your opinions may be different.
