sunset

above our heads hovers a cloudy sky
reflecting the expression on your face
as you gaze at me, then take my hands
and wrap me up in the warm blanket
of your body, and I finally escape the cold
at last making progress towards removing the wall

we have to fight hard to remove this wall
that stands between you, me and the hazy sky
keeping us apart and leaving us cold
I know you can see the pain in my face
but yours seems to be covered by a blanket
and you knowingly lead me by the hands

into a pit that not even your strong hands
can pull me out of, because of the wall
between us, much stronger than this blanket
that is colored the foggy blue of the sky
and feels soft on the roughness of my face
and just barely rescues me from this bitter cold

because when you leave me, you leave me cold
and I grasp frantically in the dark with my hands
and I struggle to recall the structure of your face
as if you were right before me, but hidden behind a wall
and I scream up at the indifferent sky
and throw from my body this ridiculous blanket

because it is so frigid that even this blanket
offers little protection from the cold
and rain begins to fall from the sky
until suddenly your modest hands
break through the stubborn, stiff wall
and gently touch the side of my face

and then all I can see is your beautiful face
and you again offer the warmth of your blanket
with each gesture, you remove a brick in the wall
yet somehow prevent the harsh, windy cold
from touching my feet or my hands
we sigh in unison, then look to the sky

to save our hands from the vicious cold
the warmth of your face is my blanket
and the wall disappears into the sky
