Billy’s 6th album was 52nd.
In 1978 Columbia Records released 52nd Street,A Follow up on his 1977 breakthrough smash The Stranger was no easy task for Billy Joel; 52nd Street shows he wasn't quite up to the challenge, though it sold similarly well and kept the momentum for his fast- track career until the more impressive Glass Houses appeared in 1980. 52nd Street isn't without its moments: "My Life" remains one of Joel's most memorable hit singles, "Half a Mile Away" is a wonderful slice of infectiously upbeat pop, and "Rosalinda's Eyes" sways to an alluringly airy Latin feel. But macho poseur numbers such as "Big Shot" and "Stiletto" are embarrassingly overwrought, while the arty "Zanzibar" ultimately comes across more as pretentious than adventurous.
In February of 1979, in a hotel room in Paris, Billy received a middle of the night transatlantic phone call informing him that Just The Way You Are had captured "Record Of The Year," and "Song of The Year," giving Billy his first two Grammy Awards. After the European tour ended, Billy traveled to Cuba for "Havana Jam" (March), an historic three day event at the Karl Marx Theater. Spring included two months of U.S. touring, two nights at the Budokan in Tokyo, and a benefit concert for several Long Island charities. In October, with sales of The Stranger and 52nd Street totaling over nine million units, Columbia Records named Billy their biggest-selling solo artist of the 20th century.
