For centuries, many have observed migrating birds in amazement as did the poet William Cullen Bryant who wondered so eloquently about this phenomenon in his poem, To a Waterfowl

"Whither, 'midst falling dew, While glow the heavens with the last steps of day,
Far through their rosy depths, dost thou pursue thy solitary way ?"
