Matt Katzbohen speaking up for Daddy...
- Introduce yrself!...I am Matt. I play guitar. I sing as well.
- How did the band meet?...Laurel and I met in high school (city-as-school) here in NYC.
- I know you got yr name from a quote yr singer loves to say: 'Daddy loves you'. I am curious to find out...what is the meaning behind this?...We had a vision of 10 million Japanese girls screaming 'We love you DADDY!', and so we had to go with it. It also represents the void left by so many asshole absent dads.
- How would you describe Daddy's sound?...Cure, Cure, Cure, Jane’s Addiction, Tool, and a lot of fun.
- What are yr influences?...Prince, Nina Simone, Nina Hagen, Metallica, Brahms, Beethoven, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Morrissey, Cure, Jane’s Addiction, Helmet, NY hardcore, Sabbath.
- Have any of you ever played in any other bands? If so, which ones?...Laurel and I were in Variety City.
- What elements do you bring to Daddy?...The visceral, earth shattering guitar, the beautiful counterpoint melodies, the harmony and sometimes melody lines. Classical music and cello concerto-esque dynamics.
- Do you have any new material you are working on/recording?...All the time.
- Which of yr songs do you like the most, and why? The least, and why?...The most: 'Your Rose' and 'Anticar', because they are dynamic and intense. If we don’t like a song, we scrap it or work on it until we like it again.
- Do you enjoy experimenting with sounds or prefer to sticking to a 'tried and true' one?...Experimenting is the best. We strive to break through and revolutionize music every time we write a new song. We want to write operas, musicals, film scores. We don’t believe in limiting ourselves to a particular genre of music.
- How would you say women in music are treated in the area you play in?...With everything from incredulousness to curiosity to denial to vehement anger.
- What sort of response do you get when you perform?...A lot of dancing, headbanging, disrobing, and orgiastic scream-alongs.
- What sort of attitudes have you experienced about yr music?...Mostly violently positive and open.
- Out of all the shows you've played, what was yr absolute favorite?...Our first show ever. We were called Variety City then, and we played our school Halloween party. A kid ended up in the hospital because he drank paint thinner by accident.
- What would you consider yr absolute low point?...Whenever the stylist isn’t there on time.
- What areas did you love performing in?...Canada rules, L.A. rocks. Basically everywhere.
- Lyric-wise, what do you write about a lot?...Laurel writes about sex, parks, cars, love, the Cure, trannies.
- Do you have certain political/social issues you focus on?...We are anti-war. Fuck Bush. We play with the NJ Coalition for Peace a lot, and were on their compilation.
- What are you trying to accomplish with yr music?...Opening minds...or, in Greek, 'psychedelia'.
- What have you learned about yrself through being in this band?...That we fucking rock.
- Any lessons that performing has taught you?...font size='1'>Never, ever say 'I’m Sorry'.
- Is there anything else you'd like to add about yr band, yr experiences, and yr lives?...Buy our new album, 'Your Rose', and come to our shows. Daddy loves you.
