a quick chat with theo!!!
- Introduce yrself!...I'm Theo. I am a singer, firstly from the Lunachicks, and now I have my own band called Theo. I like chocolate, and I vote and will do whatever I can to get Bush out of office!
- Did you play in any other bands before the Lunachicks?...Nope-but I have recorded with a lot of bands since and during, though, such as Blondie, Snot, the Toilet Boys, and Cub Country.
- Do you consider all of these experiences good ones?...Absolutely!
- I don't think there's anyone into female-fronted punk that hasn't heard the Lunachicks...I know you're working on some solo stuff now, and have released a self-titled album. Can you tell me a little about it?...I made a cd which I self-released and sold out of on www.ilovetheo.com and at my shows. I am working on new stuff now with my band, and did a demo produced by Moby.
- Is it anything like the material you have previously played?...Yes and no. It's angry and there are punk and metal flavours, but it's Theo-more mature, and it's more dancy poppy, I guess...
- The Lunachicks held so much appeal to a lot of women because they were the feminist joke band...a band that had fun and wrote crazy songs while still supporting women's issues such as abortion and women's role in society. Why did you choose to write about the things you did?...Because it's important to be aware and fight for our rights, and it's also important to laugh and take the piss out of life's hardships.
- Who wrote the lyrics/songs among you?...I wrote almost all of them
- What were trying to say with yr music?...Pffffft!!!
- Women sometimes have a hard time becoming successful in punk and hardcore, because it's so male-dominated...how did the Lunachicks land a sweet deal on Go-Kart and rise above?...Worship from Go-Kart, of course!
- When you perform now and when you performed in the Lunachicks, what sort of reaction does/did yr music usually get?...A great reaction! People have been very surprised by what I am doing now, because they don't expect what they get. I like that. I like keeping people on their toes.
- Do a lot of women come to yr shows?...Yes, of course!
- What do you consider the best show you've ever played?...For the Lunachicks...the one this past weekend, April 24th 2004, the Lunachicks played in DC at the 9:30 Club, a benefit show for NARAL Pro-Choice America and Punkvoter.com, and for Theo it was in LA with 'The Network' this past November.
- What cool people have you met along yr travels that you don't think you could have met otherwise?...Tons...all the other bands we toured with...Debbie Harry, the Ramones, Iggy Pop, Joan Jett, Richie Stotz...
- I know that you have been in many movies including Troma's 'Terror Firmer', Martin Scorcese's 'Bringing Out the Dead', and Miramax's 'Tadpole', to name a few...can you tell us a little about those experiences?... They were amazing (Scorcese-holy shit!!!), torturous ('Terror Firmer'), and all were fun...
- Any more movie parts for you in the future?...I am in Jane Campion's 'In the Cut', High Times' 'Potluck'...see www.potluckmovie.com, Ned Ambler's 'Astin Valentine' and many other films there...www.nedambler.com, and will be getting more and more fabulous roles.
- You are personal friends with Debbie Harry and just helped record back-up vocals on Blondie's new album, 'No Exit'...what was it like working with Debbie and the rest of the band?...Unbelievable!!! I remember leaving the studio and thinking that if I got hit by a bus, I'd die happy.
- I'm aware that Gina is now playing in Bantam, and everyone is else probably working on things on the side...can we expect anything new from the Lunachicks in the future as well?...Ya never know...
- I know you have all been very close friends for a while...do you still all keep in touch?...Hell yeah, all the time! We're family.
- What have you learned about yrself through being in this band?...Tons about myself, and too much about everyone else! Hahahaha!
- Any lessons that performing has taught you?...That there ain't nothin' else like it in the world!!!
- What do you consider yr motto(s)?...'Leap and the net will appear', and 'no regrets'.
- One more thing I'm dying to know as another heavily tattooed woman...who does all yr ink? It's beautiful!...Mike Ledger, Timothy Hoyer, Chris Trevino...
- Is there anything else you'd like to add about yr band, yr experiences, and yr life?...I want women to not be afraid to do whatever they want to do, and to not take any shit! And also, to explore their creativity, and not fear it. I want everyone to vote, and respect yourselves!
