A Usual Day at an Unusual School - Sometimes we don't think we have enough information to solve a problem, but in reality we do. Students perform a play which takes place in a school where some of the students always lie and the rest always tell the truth. At first it seems like there is never enough information, but in each case, it is possible for Terry figure out more about the students that might have seemed possible.
Bricks Activity -an interactive lesson
Letters to the Man in the Moon -In this activity, students will be given the opportunity to write, communicate mathematically with their classmates, and defend their reasoning, activities that are not encouraged often enough in many mathematics classrooms. Additionally, students can discuss the mathematics that it took to allow us to conquer space and land on the moon.
Lifting
Bodies: Designing Your Own Space Craft -in
this activity, students will be given the opportunity to work cooperatively
with their classmates in designing a "lifting body"; that is, a wingless
vehicle that could fly back to Earth from space, landing like an aircraft.

Mighty m&m Math Experiment -Mighty m&m Math teaches fractions and percentages in a motivating and mouth-watering way
How to Solve Problems -You have the opportunity to learn to solve problems easily and reliably. You only need to take the time to understand how problems are solved. This site shows you how to do this.
Connections for the Future -In a webquest, students utilize World Wide Web resources to obtain data which is then analyzed and used in various mathematical exercises. Math webquests involve reasoning and critical thinking in a constructivist setting.
Thinks.com -fun and games for playful brains.
Standard 4.5
Calculator.com - free access to online calculators to help you solve problems and answer questions.
How Far is it? -This service uses data from the US Census and a supplementary list of cities around the world to find the latitude and longitude of two places, and then calculates the distance between them (as the crow flies). It also provides a map showing the two places.
IMATTT
/ CIESE Project
-Integrating Mathematics & Technology in the Middle school - A Teacher
Professional Development Program
Standard 4.6
Fun With Numbers -accumulation of various number resources to aid in your enjoyment of integers and real numbers alike.
BEATCALC -Beat the Calculator!
Primes and Composites -Lesson on Prime and Composite Numbers
Space
Shuttle Statistics -In this activity,
students will be given the opportunity to enhance their computation skills
using real life statistics associated with the Space Shuttle. Skills emphasized
include working with fractions, decimals, percents, ratios and proportions,
comparing units, and converting units. Students are also given the opportunity
to create their own word problems to challenge their classmates. This activity
might serve as a review activity to provide students with additional practice
with various computations.
Standard 4.7
The Internet Pizza Server -Topic: Data Collection, Unit Price, Proportions, Research, & Area of Circles, (many more can be adapted).
Totally Tessellated -This site will give you a comprehensive introduction to tessellations.
Online Geometry -activities for middle or high school geometry.
Dueling Pinwheels -Dazzle your students with this so-cool animated introductory exercise.
Pythagoras' Playground -From this site, we will use the amazing properties of the Pythagorean Theorem to explore the world around us.
Fractals-a fractals unit for Elementary and Middle School Students
Symmetry and Patterns -the art of oriental carpets. The study of symmetry offers one approach to analyzing patterns in Oriental carpets.
A
Cylinder Workshop -Students will work with given formulas
to solve for specific variables. They will calculate the volume of
a cylinder and analyze the change in volume when there is a constant surface
area. They will repeat the problem with a constant perimeter.
Standard 4.8
Using Manipulatives to Explain Sign Multiplying
Mystery
Operations -In this activity the computer makes up a
mystery operation, and you have to figure out what the operation is.
Standard 4.9
How Far is Your Commute? -calculating distances "as the crow flies".
Buffon's Needle Experiment - involves dropping a needle on a lined sheet of paper and determining the probability of the needle crossing one of the lines on the page. The remarkable result is that the probability is directly related to the value of pi.
Standard 4.10
Time Estimation -A watched pot never boils! Is this true, or does it just involve making accurate time estimates. Try to estimate when 1 minute has passed.
Predicting and Estimating Speed and the SR-71 -This activity provides students with the opportunity to predict and estimate speeds of various familiar, real-world items. In addition, students will develop a sense for the magnitude of numbers by comparing the speeds of these items. Students will also be given the opportunity to convert between and among the metric system and the S.I. (Systeme Internationale) system of measurement. The backdrop for this activity is the SR-71 aircraft, currently being tested at NASA Dryden.
Pathfinder: Finding Wind Speed -In this activity, students will create their own anemometer, an instrument used to measure wind speed. Using this tool and the Beaufort Scale, students will measure and record estimated and average wind speeds. As an extension, students can plot and then analyze real-world wind speed data collected by Pathfinder during one of its recent missions.
Mr. Pitonyak's Pyramid Puzzle -during this project you will be asked to estimate the cost of building a pyramid using modern materials and ancient methods. In teams you will plan, collect data, submit a bid for the job (only the lowest bidding company will be awarded the job), create a scale drawing and model, and present a final report to the class.
The
Excellent Adventure -estimations
for planning a trip.
Standard 4.11
What’s
My Rule? -For this game you will be given a set of x
values which will be put into a function machine which will process
the numbers and spit out y values. Your job is to guess the rule of the
function machine.
