Resources available over the Internet from the USGS and its various divisions are unbelievable. This butterfly website is fun for students of any age. The NAMS Ecology Club used it as research starting point for lessons to assist elementary students with butterfly garden designs.

In 1996, the North Arlington Middle School Seventh Grade won the USEPA Region 2 Presidential Environmental Youth award for butterfly garden activities in the Hackensack Meadowlands. The NAMS Ecology Club won the Rotary International-NJ Youth Service Preserve Planet Earth Award for its outstanding work in restoring habitat and monitoring the Passaic River. The Watershed Education Page was created as part of the SSI teacher-training workshop at Steven Institute. Its primary focus is the Passaic and Hackensack River watersheds. We have had problems with incorporating our collection data into the webpage, but hope to be able to finally get that bug worked out. You will find links here to a variety of watershed resources.
This page was composed by Loris Chen, the seventh grade science teacher at North Arlington Middle School. My philosophy is that environmental education should not be a stand-alone science class, but rather an integrating theme that involves students in math, social studies, science, reading, and economic applications and investigations of the world around them. The State Environmental Education Roundtable selected the NAMS seventh grade as a model for using the environment as an integrating theme. The following are awards and grants that have been received. I will be glad to share information about the application process for any of them.
Alliance for New Jersey Environmental Education- 1995 Outstanding Environmental Educator Award
USEPA Region 2- 1997 Environmental Quality Award
New Jersey Audubon Society- 1998 Environmental Education Award
Phillips Environmental Partnerships Grant
Frederick L. Hipp Foundation for Excellence in Education Grant
