Student Directions

1) Using your ruler, measure the diameter in centimeters of your whole cookie.  Record your measurement on the student data sheet.

2) Observe the whole cookie.  Make a prediction, without counting or breaking the cookie, how many chips do you think are in your cookie?  Record.

3) Weigh your whole cookie in grams.  Record.

4) Place your whole cookie inside the plastic bag.  Make sure you squeeze out most of the air.  SEAL THE BAG CLOSED!

5) Stand up and forcefully drop the cookie bag to the floor directly in front of you.  CAUTION:  Make sure you have enough room around you so you do not hit anyone or anything.

6) Repeat this about five times or until the cookie is crumbled.

7) Empty the contents of your bag onto your plate.

8) Use the toothpicks to carefully separate the cookie crumbs from the chocolate chips.  Make two piles on your plate.

9) Count the number of chocolate chips.  Record.

10) Weigh just your chocolate chips in grams, making sure the cookie crumbs are off the chips.  Record.

11)  Calculate the percentage of chocolate in each cookie.  Record.
(HINT:  Divide the weight of the chips by the weight of the whole cookie)
