REFLECTIONS Ed Chenevey

We will continue in 2005 the same as in 2004, same officers, same meeting place and time, and same dues; $20. Please make checks payable to me since we have no bank account.

I hope that all of you have a Happy Holiday Season.

Decisions, decisions...... Well, I asked for it. Progress on my almost built Hatz has been in reverse till now. I have had to unbuild some of what was already done, and the more I learn about this 34 year old design, the more unsure I am as to what to change and what to leave.

Since I have the "Big" engine, I want to keep weight down. The lack of room for goodies on the panel means it won’t get heavy with gear. The big engine needs to be fed, and the fuel tank as originally drawn on the plans holds only about 20 gallons. I modelled an alternate tank design where the top is the top camber of the center section, with a lip all around to mount it with. That would hold about 6 more gallons. Art B is convincing me to do it in fiberglass, which makes good sense. That would save some weight over aluminum as well.

I was able to get a cd with all of the AHA newsletters from the past 12 or so years. Builders ideas and modifications were discussed , and documented. Some builders have eliminated the ailerons on the top wings, changing to Frise type lower ailerons with more chord and length. That would eliminate the slave struts as well as a bunch of lumber, and since they will be hinged off the rear spar, eliminates the false spar and hinge bracing. Advantages are less adverse yaw, lighter stick force and static balancing to eliminate the potential for flutter. Even though the top ailerons are already made, they require some rework to make them right. Eliminating them will be easy, some false ribs and a new trailing edge, splicing the wingtip bow......

This process, the constant redesign, if only in my head is fun. Any input will be appreciated. Biplanes are foreign to me. I understand what goes on, but have no first hand experience. I have to decide what to "improve" and what will best left the way the designer did it.

Check the website, I will be posting a list of possible LSA capable models.

I want to wish all a safe and happy holiday season.
