My gymnastics teacher is an agent of the New York Metropolitan Opera. She was able to get her students (including me) to try out for non-singing parts in the Met's production of Hansel und Gretel. (The Opera is in German and "und" means "and" in German.)
I was chosen to be a dragon fly in the Opera. Can you belive it!!!! Me, on stage at the New York Metrolopolitan Opera!!! It doesn't get much better!!!
We had many rehearsals and some dress rehearsals. There are six performances in total.
Thirty of us take a bus into New York City. When we get there we walk up to our dressing room. Then we wait for the dressers to help us put on our costumes. After we are dressed, we wait for our call to go on stage.
First we get a ten minute warning and we get lined up. When we here our call, we walk down to stage right and left. Our first appearance on screan is a scene when Hansel und Gretel get scared in the forest from all of the animals. All the animals go non stage in turn on cue. I the leader of four other dragon flies. When we go on, they all fly behind me.
The next time we go on stage, it is the scene when the Witch users her magic to put Hansel in the cage. All the animals help the Witch.
The third time we are on stage, is when we see Witches fly in the air. We are watching the Witches fly with Gretel.
The fourth time we are on stage, is when Hansel and Gretel push the Witch into the oven and all of the animals are on stage to celebrate.
The last time we are on stage is to bow. That is fun because the audience claps very loud and it makes us feel good!!!
