Martin Klinger was a member of 2001 and 2002 NIKE Project 40 player pool. Klinger became the fourth of five Project 40 players in the MetroStars' history. The other four are Carlos Parra, Barry Swift, Tim Howard and later D.J. Countess, who was traded in early 2002. The Metros picked him in the fourth round with the 46th pick in the draft.
