BIO
Mike Petke came to the MetroStars in 1998 an became an instant success. He started 25 of his 28 games in his rookie year. Was selected as finalist for the Rookie of the Year Award. Mike scored his first MLS goal versus rivals New England Revolution. The goal was latter voted by the fans as MetroStars.com Goal of the Year. The MetroStars chance of advancing in the 1998 playoffs was all on his shoulders. With his is hair colored bright red, the pressure was on him to convert the tieing shoot-out goal. Unfortuantely he missed, and the season was over.

In 1999, Petke didn't play as much as before. This was because Bora's "magic" couldn't understand how to put a team together to win just one game against other teams that were just as bad.

But 2000 as the year for Petke to shine. With new staff members, Petke got his well deserved playing time. He easily man marked the league's best forwards. He was so good, he formed rivalries with Mamaduo Diallo and Ariel Grazaini. With Octavio Zambrano coaching the East in the All-Star game, Mike was selected to come off the bench. With the help of Lothar Matheus, Petke was able to gain attention overseas in Germany. He was close to sign with Bayern Munich after trying out with the team, but decided to stay with the Metros.

Mike had an average season in 2001, but not as good as the year before. He was voted to start the East in the All-Star game. US National Team coach selected him to play versus Ecuador. Unfortunately for him, he played out of position, not helping him impress Bruce. In Game 3 of the playoffs in the 1st round, he was forced to leave at halftime because of heat stress.
