Bowa hired as new Phillies manager
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Former Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Larry Bowa was hired Wednesday as the team's manager. "When all was said and done, experience, knowledge of the game, love of the game, and more importantly, knowledge and love of Philadelphia, ruled the day," general manager Ed Wade said. Bowa said he could not guarantee victories. "The one thing that I will bring to this ball club is intensity," he said. "These guys will go out and play hard every night. ... When you start accepting losing, I think you've got a problem." Bowa, a third-base coach with Seattle last season, replaces Terry Francona, fired on Oct. 1. Bowa gets a second chance at managing 12 years after compiling an 81-127 record with the San Diego Padres. Wade interviewed nine candidates, including former Phillies catchers Bob Boone and Darren Daulton. Boone, who managed Kansas City for three seasons, played with Bowa on the 1980 Phillies team that won the franchise's only World Series title.

Staley's Season Over as Birds place the runner on IR
PHILADELPHIA ---- Duce Staley's season ended yesterday as he underwent foot surgery to repair a break he had suffered in the Eagles 38-10 victory over the Falcons on October 1st.
Staley had rushed for over 1,000 yards in his last two seasons with the Eagles, but was struggling this season. After putting up 201 yards rushing in week 1 versus Dallas, his numbers dwindled as defenses began stacking the line. He rushed for only 143 yards on 53 carries his last four games. In Staley's absence last week against Washington, Eagle running backs Brian Mitchell, Darnell Autry, Cecil Martin, and Stanley Prichett rushed for 36 yards between them. In contrast, quarterback Donovan McNabb rushed for 43 yards by himself.
To pick up some of the slack, the team signed journeyman RB Amp Lee to fill Staley's spot on the roster. Lee last played for the Super Bowl champion St. Louis Rams where he was used sparingly. He has never been a full-time starter. His best rushing season was in 1995 as a backup for the Minnesota Vikings when he started three games and rushed for 371 yards on 69 rushes.
