Lilly pitched well for 5 2-3 innings in his fourth start. He did not give up an earned run, allowing seven hits, striking out four and walking one. He got cleanup hitter Juan Gonzalez to ground out three times, twice with runners on.
But Lilly left in the sixth with the game tied at 1 and the bases loaded. The Rangers loaded the bases after Mark Teixeira and Hank Blalock hit back-to-back singles, and Ryan Christenson got aboard on shortstop Miguel Tejada's fielding error, his second miscue of the game. Tejada rose up too early and the ball ticked off the front of his glove. |
Macha wants his starters to go deeper into games.
"I worked behind a lot," Lilly said. "That makes it tough on me trying to pitch like that and also on the bullpen."
Lilly was helped by his defense.
Second baseman Mark Ellis made a tricky, backhanded catch on a looper by Kevin Mench in the fourth, falling over Tejada to make the play in shallow center.
Tejada made an error two batters later when he overthrew first base on a single by Blalock, allowing Blalock to reach second. Blalock scored an unearned run on Christenson's single to center that made it 1-all.
