Excerpt from "Dialogues of the Lives and Miracles of the Italian Fathers" by Pope Saint Gregory I The Great
When (St.) Paul says, "For faith is the substance of things to be hoped for, the evidence of things not seen," it means that it is what is not able to be seen that is truly to be said to be believed. For that which is already able to be seen cannot be said to be believed.

Saint Gregory was born around the year 540. He rose through various offices to the prefecture which he renounced. He entered the monastic life and, once ordained deacon, he discharged the duties of legate at Constantinople. On September 3, 590 he was elevated to the Chair of Saint Peter and he proved to be a true shepherd by carrying out his office, helping the poor, spreading and strengthening the faith. He wrote extensively on moral and theological subjects. He died on March 12, 604.
