David Williamson's play, The Club, was first performed here 21 years ago at the Melbourne Theatre Company with Frank Gallacher, Gerald Maguire and Terence Donovan playing the leads. Most of us would probably remember the play through Bruce Beresford's 1980 film starring Jack Thompson, Frank Wilson and Graham Kennedy. To mark the maturity of Williamson's most-performed play, the MTC has revived The Club. Bruce Myles directs and TV goes live. Blue Heelers' John Wood and Big Sky's Gary Sweet take the leads in a strong cast. Collingwood supporter Sweet who played SANFL for Glenelg plays coach Laurie. He's modelled his role on Tommy Hafey, Kevin Sheedy and David Parkin. Don't expect his side to win but do see one of the best plays to come out of Melbourne about Melbourne. David Williamson sends his blessings from Noosa.
