The Book of Dragons
Take one first-rate collection of fire-breathing,
scale-flashing, wing-flapping, tail-lashing dragon
yarns.
Lace it with elegant black-and-white line drawings
and a generous dollop of unabashedly
romantic color
plates awash with vibrant hues. The result?
A deliciously old-fashioned storybook,
delivering just the sort
of fantasy Hague is best known for. He pulls out all the stops for this one,
using watercolors to present a
diverse assortment of winged beasts. There are green dragons, red
dragons,
multi-headed dragons, even dragons that hint of the Orient
with their long beards and
manes.
The stories - from such luminaries as Kenneth Grahame, J.R.R. Tolkien,
E. Nesbit,
Elizabeth Coatsworth and C.S. Lewis -
are equally splendid. All ages.

Demi's Dragons and Fantastic Creatures
Opulent with gold, expansive with foldout double spreads,
and lush with decorative collages of
Demi's signature
marbled-paper designs, creatures bedecked with multiple mini-images of
themselves
and other creatures, and oriental imagery:
an affectionate celebration of Chinese
dragons in
all their rich multiplicity.
Each dragon (water, heavenly, wind, etc.) or other creature
(phoenix, elephant, tortoise)
is accompanied by a rather uninspired couplet summarizing the
creature's
symbolic significance (``The lioness fights for wisdom and truth;/she scares away demons
with claw and tooth'');
the explication of the same ideas, at the end, is more prosaic, but more
satisfactory.
A handsome, idiosyncratic presentation;
some of the dragons--the thunder dragon in
swirling black and white,
or the dramatic red- and-black fire dragon--are magnificent.
Dragon for Breakfast
Much to his surprise, King Ulf's breakfast egg contains a small dragon,

about being a dragon. Besides all the fun,
there's a lesson in self-esteem and in the groundlessness
of many childhood fears. The Dragon Of Navy Pier
is a story for reading to little ones and for
young readers to enjoy on their own
. The art work by Rachel Bass is perfectly suited to Kate
Noble's lively text.
The Dragon Of Navy Pier is an exceptionally
delightful picturebook that will
enchant, entertain --
and provide a bit of thoughtful reflection as well!
Dragon Steel

Dragon's Halloween: Dragon's Fifth Tale (The Dragon Tales)

laughter as Dav Pilkey's warm
story cascades with childhood feelings and pictures them wittily.
Full-color illustrations.

cardboard dragon only to find
that the dragon suffers the
same affliction--a loose tooth. Helping out her dragon, and
subconsciously
facing her own fears, Sara gently performs the
necessary operation, and then lets
her dad do the same for her.
This should be a helpful story to read in advance of any tooth
problems,
or perhaps even mid-crisis.
An appealing blue creature, first introduced in 1990,
displays his independent thinking and good
humor in four episodes
appropriate to the season.
Dragon decides to decorate his tree where he
finds it growing, without cutting it;
he's proud of the candy wreath he makes, but it's too tasty to last
long;
he gives away the presents he's bought for himself to needier
animals. Not exceptional, but
genuinely warmhearted;
the art, drawn with assurance and verve, is vibrantly colored. (Easy reader.
