STAR OF THE MONTH
Alexis Smith
Cool, classy and confident, Alexis Smith carved a career out of hand-me-down roles before emerging in her own right as a distinguished leading lady. "If Bette Davis or Ida Lupino or Ann Sheridan turned down something, then it fell on me," she once wryly commented of her 10 years at Warner Bros. Smith co-starred opposite Errol Flynn in Gentleman Jim (1942) and San Antonio (1945). She tried her hand at comedy with Jack Benny in The Horn Blows at Midnight (1945), and provided the love interest in two musical biographies, Rhapsody in Blue (1945) and Night and Day (1946). TCM features Alexis Smith in 25 movies, Mondays in May.

DIRECTOR OF THE MONTH
Roy Del Ruth
Equally at home in comedy, drama and musicals, Roy Del Ruth was one of those studio directors who appeared able to handle any assignment. He excelled in Pre-code sex comedies and melodramas such as Employees' Entrance (1933), before moving to MGM for such spectacular all-star musicals as Broadway Melody of 1936 (1936) and DuBarry Was a Lady (1943). Del Ruth's long association with James Cagney, encompassed five films beginning with the comedy Blonde Crazy (1931) and continuing through West Point Story (1950), a military musical co-starring Doris Day and Virginia Mayo. Roy Del Ruth is celebrated as Director of the Month with 28 movies, Tuesdays in May.

HOLLYWOOD VICES
20 Movies; Saturdays Drinking and Smoking, Gambling, Adultery, Prostitution and drugs. This is one festival that's highly addictive. TCM's review of movie vices begin with Drinking and Smoking (May 6) features Susan Hayward in an Oscar nominated performance as Lillian Roth in I'll Cry Tomorrow (1955) the tale of a singer-actress who fell from grace because of alcohol abuse, then fought her way back. Gambling (May 13) shows the classy side of casinos in Ocean's Eleven (1960) starring Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, as well as the seedier side of betting parlors in The Cincinnati Kid (1965), with Steve McQueen. Adultery (May 20), was never portrayed onscreen to more sizzling effect than in MGM's version of James M. Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946), Drugs (May 20), played a role in The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970). Movie Prostitutes have been played by the best-among them Garbo in Anna Christie (1930) and Elizabeth Taylor in Butterfield 8 (1960). Vices are the focus in 20 movies, Saturdays in May

MUSICAL OUTTAKES
9 Movies with Outtakes; May 17-18
During the Golden Age of the movie musical at MGM, the studio boasted such an abundance of talent and material that it was a common practice for entire numbers to be staged and filmed, then discarded if the movie ran too long or some other problem arose. Fortunately for film historians and movie buffs, many of these cut numbers have been rescued from the studio vaults. TCM proudly presents television premieres of nine of these outtakes; each proceeded by the movie from which it was cut. Duchess of Idaho (1950) is followed by the deleted "You Do Something To Me," sung by Lena Horne. Following The Harvey Girls (1946) is "My Intuition," a number performed for the film by Judy Garland and John Hodiak. Jane Powell's charisma shines in two numbers cut from Holiday in Mexico (1946) ("Why So Gloomy?") and Nancy Goes to Rio (1950) (Mention My Name in Sheboygan.") There's plenty more and you can get a sneak peak in streaming video versions of these outtakes on turnerclassicmovies.com

Book of the Month Club
Erich von Stroheim directed his greatest films when Hollywood was still a small town. His quest for cinematic realism and his meticulous eye for details brought great praise but his stubborn arrogance and budget overruns eventually put an end to his directing career. In 1923, MGM butchered his 8-hour masterwork Greed to a slim 2-hours. Last year TCM helped restore this lost film to critical praised 4-hour print. Although the studios never allowed von Stroheim direct again, he remained in the public eye as the 'Hated Hun' in WW II films and most memorably as Max von Mayerling in Sunset Boulevard (1950). Arthur Lennig has written a new biography of the notorious director entitled STROHEIM (The University of Kentucky Press). Visit turnerclassicmovies.com for the author's reflections on "the man you love to hate." Plus you can see restored version of Greed on June 5 at 11pm ET.
