During the summer months, one of the greatest activities Durango has to offer has to be whitewater rafting. You can take your entire family on a whitewater rafting trip. There are many company's that will take you rafting. Most of them are located in the downtown area. You can also take the Durango-Silverton Train. You will go from the heart of the downtown area into the Rocky Mountains, all the way to Silverton, Colorado. There, you can shop in some very unique shops, and take in some of the beautiful scenery. You can also visit Purgatory, a ski resort located about 30 minutes away from Durango. There, you can mountain bike on some of Colorado's best trails, ride the Alpine Slide, or just sit back and relax in one of Purgatory's 3 different hot tubs. Overall, this is a place not to be missed if you have the time to drive out to Colorado. A real treasure.
During the winter months, all does not shut down in Durango. In fact, Durango heats up during the cold winter months. The best destination in the winter has to be skiing at Purgatory. They have over 2,500 acres for your skiing pleasure. If you are a first-time skiier, they also have a pretty good ski school and great beginner runs. They also have a tubing hill, which is very fun.
Of all the destinations around Albuquerque, this one is not to be missed. If you have the time to visit, I would definetly recommend it.
