>> 1997 >> SMASH HITS
Larger Than Life, It's ...Human Nature

Twelve months ago, just about no-one had heard of Human Nature. But faster than a speeding bullet Mike Tierney, Phil Burton, Toby Allen and Andrew Tierney are becoming the next Aussie super stars. Trish Pavone managed to squeeze herself into the Nature's very hectic schedule to recapture the past year's magic moments and 'hairy' highlights.

What has been the highlight of the last twelve months?
Michael: Becing in Smash Hits. haha. But before that, I think releasing the album was huge and supporting Michael Jackson as well.
All: That was incredible
Michael: Just getting on his stage, let alone dancing on the same stage as Michael Jackson was great
Andrew: We'd walk around on stage when we were rehearsing and there were strips of tape on the stage with 'Billy Jean' written on them. That would be where he would be standing when he sang 'Bilie Jean'.
Toby: We's move them all around. haha. Unfortuantely we didn't get to meet him because the night that we were meant to meet him in Perth we had to come back to Sydney to do a gig.
Michael: We would have loved to have met him, but I guess we'll meet him at the Grammy's next year. haha

Was there an outfit you wore that made you cringe?
Toby: I had to wear these really tight black pants in Japan and I just didn't like them at all.
Michael: They did out make up and hair too. They've got space age hairdressers. We were in this type of machine, they put your whole head in it. It's like a car wash. It washes your hair and it did it all for you. Then they took me out fron under it and cut it. We were a bit freaked out. My hair looked like a reject from the 80's.
Andrew: They were saying 'you look beautiful. Do you like it?'
Phil: Then they put us in these white outfits and we looked like we were going to play a game of cricket!
Andrew: They were really into mesh shirts too. Black and white mesh shirts. Very freaky.

What was the strangest thing that happened to you?
Andrew: It would have to be the instore appearance we did in Liverpool in Sydney. We'd just finished the gig on stage and were sitting up on stage signing autographs when this girl came up to me and said 'Andrew, you're a babe. Can I give you a kiss?' And I said 'Okay'. So I leant over and then I felt her tongue all over my mouth. I pulled back because I was kind of shocked. I didn't know what happened. She gave me this full-on kiss. She was about 20. She just stood back, she wasn't fazed at all.
Phil: I got a letter from a girl from Perth that was kind of a fantasy letter. She went into detail about us making love in a hotel room and then halfway through I started whispering the words to 'Wishes' in her ear.
Michael: The strangest thing that happened to me was when were in our hotel room in Japan. I went into the toilet and when I came out there was a knock at the door and the hotel manager had come up to the room. Andrew had lit a firecracker that one of the fans had given us in the room. The smoke alarm had gone off and there were all these firemen in the hallway. I didn't know what was going on.
Andrew: It was like a sparkler so I lit it and then I just kicked back. There was no alarm, just this light went on. So I thought everything was okay, but when I heard the knock at the door I ran into the toilet because I thought it would be firemen. Mike answered the door and he goes 'Andrew, there's someone at the door for you!' We almost got kicked out of the hotel.
Toby: Nothing realy strange has happened to me. I haven't really had anyone stalk me or anything. We did this performance in a shopping center in Japan and they asked me 'That do you wear to bed?' and I said 'Nothing'. The next day this girl said to me 'Is it true you wear nothing to bed? I would really like to see.' We had two rooms, one apart from each other. This one nigt in Tokyo, these fans had managed to get the room in between ours and were knocking on our doors all night and slipping notes under the doors.
Phil: You'd look out and there would be peeking through the eyehole or they'd be looking under the door. At one stage Toby grabed the handle of the door pretending to open it and they bolted.

What's been the worst piece of gossip you've heard about yourself?
Phil: Laely I've been hearing I'm married. It's news to me but I'd love to meet her. And two of us are supposedly gay
Michael: I've heard that I perm my hair. haha.
Andrew: The one that we don't really like is that we're a manufactured group. We pride ourselves on the fact that we put ourselves together and all our music is real, part ofwhat we've been working on for seven years. People sometimes put us in the basket of a lot of those European manufactured groups.
Michael: I was married too. You started that one Andrew! We did this show and Andrew said 'Michael has found himself a bride in Japan'. He was just joking but after the performance all these people rushed up to me and congratulated me on my marriage
Toby: Wherever we go it's just an ongoing joke that Mike's looking for a bride.

Have you ever thought to yourseves, 'I've had enough! I don't want to do this anymore'?
Toby: No, because we're doing something we love. There's always going to be something else, like another gig or a new single. I think it's exciting for us to see our music in the charts and getting great support and travelling around is good fun. Sometimes you get tired, but it doesn't stop you from doing what you do.
Michael: You can have enough of getting up at six in the morning sometimes, especially if you have a couple in a row.
Phil: The closest thing you think is I've had enough and I need a day off. Not I want to quit.
Michael: Wee need to schedule a day off, we can't just take one.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
Phil: Oh, world tour. haha
Michael: Ten Grammys. hahah
Andrew: This yea in perticular is going to be a particularly crucial year for us. We're going to head ove rto Europe and the UK and try to crack it there. And after that, the second album. The then the world tour ...
Phil: We'll get Michael JAckson to support us!

What's your ultimate dream?
Phil: I'd love to own a big dark green Jag! And I'd love to race in the celebrity Grand Prix. I'm a car freak.
Michael: My ultimate dream ...
Andrew: Grow five inches. haha.
Michael: ha! Just to keep doing what I love
Toby: I just want my voice to get deeper and deeper.
Andrew: I'd like to write a Grammy Award-winning song and be up there when they say 'And the winner is ...Human Nature!' That would be sensational!
