Jake Sisko paced nervously while his fiancé sat on the couch and watched him. How Julian could be so calm he didn’t know.
“Jake, you keep going like that and you’re going to be too tired for our wedding night.”
Jake scowled at him and then sighed. “What if your parents don’t like me? What if they don’t approve of us getting married?”
Julian smiled and held his arms out. “Come here.” When the younger man was cuddled into his arms, the doctor sighed and spoke softly. “I love you and nothing will ever change that, Jake. I’m marrying you the day after tomorrow not matter what my parents say.”
“I love you too and you know I want nothing more than to be your husband but I don’t want to be the cause of a fight between you and your parents.”
“You won’t be.” Julian kissed his forehead. “They’ll love you. I don’t know how they couldn’t.”
Julian snuggled down into bed. He really missed Jake but knew that in two days he’d never have to sleep without him again.
He’d been right. His parents had liked Jake. He’d won them over with his quick wit and bright smile. Of course their chemistry had helped a bit too.
His mother, Amsha, had even taken him aside and told him he’d never looked so happy and that she was delighted for him. Of course, Richard, his father, had mentioned the fourteen-year age difference but Jake and Ben had defused the comment by saying that Jake had always liked older dates. Otherwise the meeting of their two families couldn’t have gone better.
Julian rolled over and cuddled up with Jake’s pillow. Tomorrow Miles and his family and some of his other friends were arriving and the next day… Jake Sisko would be his husband.
Julian sighed. Things were going to be perfect for their wedding.
“Do you, Julian Subatoi Bashir, take Jake to be your lawfully wedded husband to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, forsaking all others as long as you both shall live?”
Julian smiled. “I do.”
“And do you, Jacob Benjamin Sisko, take Julian to be your lawfully wedded husband to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, forsaking all other as long as you both shall live?”
Jake nodded. “I do.”
“Then by the power invested in me by Star Fleet Command, I pronounce you husband and husband. Gentlemen, you may kiss your groom.”
Jake pulled the doctor in for a long, hot kiss. They pulled apart to cat calls and a few whistles.
Captain Sisko raised his voice above the din. “Ladies and gentlemen, may I present my son and son-in-law, Dr. and Mr. Bashir-Sisko.”
Julian was reading a padd when Jake came in. They’d been married just under a year and Julian couldn’t wait for their first real vacation together which they were using to celebrate their anniversary.
Jake walked over to his husband and pulled the padd out of his hands. He tossed it gently over his shoulder and plopped down in Julian’s lap. After several minutes of kissing, Jake pulled away. “Ask me what I did today.”
“What did you do today, Jake?”
Jake smiled a huge smile. “I looked into us being parents.”
“No!”
“Julian…”
“No! It’s too risky. Male pregnancy is dangerous.”
“People have been doing it for over a century.”
“Men have been dying for over a century tying it. I don’t want you to do it.”
Jake sighed. “Julian, I want to be a father.”
“So we’ll adopt. There are plenty of orphans in the universe. We can give them our love.”
Julian stopped his pacing in front of Jake’s position on the couch. Jake took his hand and pulled him down next to him.
“Of course, we can. But Julian I want us to have a baby that’s ours biologically.”
Julian felt the same way but…“We could have someone else carry it.”
Jake sighed. “I know but I think it would mean more to us if only it was you and I involved.”
The doctor nodded. He could see that his was important to his husband. “Then I’ll do it.”
Jake jerked back… “But you just said it was dangerous."
Julian nodded. “It is. That’s why I don’t want you doing it. But I’m a doctor. I’ll know if something’s wrong when you might not. It’ll be safer for me to do it.”
“But… your career. You need to get close to your patients and the belly and the amount of rest you need… Julian, I’m a writer. I don’t need to be up and about. You do. It makes more sense for me to do it.”
Julian shook his head. “The only way one of us carries a baby is if it’s me. And that’s the end of this discussion.”
Julian sighed as he laid in bed. He was eight months pregnant and he hadn’t been to work in almost six weeks.
He and Jake had taken their vacation and gone ahead with the baby making procedure. Now in just a little while, their daughter Jennifer Amsha Bashir-Sisko would be born. Julian hadn’t mentioned it but he thought that they were in for a lot of work…
They may have helped quite a bit with Tiana, Jake’s sister but that wasn’t exactly the same. Oh, well, they’d see.
Julian came awake to the sound of singing. He could figure out why Jake would be singing until it hit him… The baby.
Rolling over, he could see Jake cradling Jenny in his arms. He was softly rocking and trying to get her back to sleep.
Julian had never seen anything more loving in his life.
Jake rolled over in bed and sighed when he discovered Julian wasn’t there. The doctor had started taking the night shift so he could spend the day with the children. While it was awfully sweet of him, it did cut in on their private time.
Just then he heard a sound in the other room. He got up thinking one of the kids was up.
Since the birth of their daughter Jennifer, they’d adopted two refugee children from the Dominion War and were always willing to take in more. The youngest, Jaelan, was usually up a few times during the night. Lately he’d been letting the boy sleep with him and that eased his missed Julian a bit.
Jake entered living area and was surprised to see Julian sprawled on their couch. “Jul, what are you doing home so early?”
“They finally got the portable EMH on-line. I’m won’t have to go to the Infirmary at night unless there’s a major emergency.”
“So you’ll be working days now? That’ll be okay. The kids will miss you but you’ll make up for it after your shift.”
Julian sat up and held his hand out for Jake. He took it and soon found himself sitting on his husband’s lap. It was one of their favorite positions and he settled into it.
“Jake, how do you feel about being a ‘Fleet spouse?”
“I love being your husband.”
Julian smiled and kissed Jake’s forehead. “You missed the question. I’ve been seriously thinking of leaving Star Fleet.”
“To do what?”
“I don’t know… The thought of not spending my days with you and the kids… Jake, I’ve loved our life the last few months.”
Jake nodded and kissed Julian slowly. He pulled back reluctantly but knew their conversation was important. “Me, too… But we can’t live like that all the time… Star Fleet would kick us off the station eventually if you didn’t work here.”
“One of us has to work… That’s just the way it is.”
“But you don’t want to keep working on the station, do you?”
“I don’t want to leave DS9 if that’s what you think. I just don’t want to have to spend a moment away from you and the children.”
Jake laughed softly. “I’ve missed you at night, you know.”
“I know.”
“You could do a split shift and work four hours early in the morning and four hours late at night. That would give you most of the day with us.”
Julian nodded. “That’s possible.”
“And I could have you in bed with me again…”
“This plan’s looking better and better…”
Julian moaned softly as Jake’s fingers worked the kinks out of his back. There had been a major explosion on Bajor and he’d gone down there to help those he could. Five days later, he was back and he’d never been so sore.
“Did you get much sleep, Jul?”
“I caught a nap here and there when I could. I spent most of my time working on the wounded.”
Jake frowned. Not that Julian could see it. He loved how dedicated his husband was to his work but “You have to take better care of yourself.”
Julian groaned and then answered. “I’ll try next time.”
Jake smiled and shook his head. That’s what he’d said the last time.
Julian and Jake lay in their bed long after the time their alarm usually went off. Today was the doctor’s first day off in… way to long. They planned on spending the morning in bed… at least until the children came to get them up.
They were now the proud parents of six children: their own Jenny, Jaelen, Jobina, Jett, Joshua, and Jonquil Marie. Their friends had accused them of looking for orphans whose names started with J. Julian did wonder if, after having adopted Jaelen and Jobina together, they didn’t do that on some unconscious level with Jett and Jonquil.
Jake cuddled close and Julian’s thoughts turned onto another path. “Mmm. How long do you think it’ll take Jobina if we locked the door?”
Jake smiled and then pulled Julian’s head down for a kiss. Just before their lips met, Jake answered, “Not long enough for what I have planned. That’s why the kids are staying at Dad’s after Tiana’s birthday party.”
Julian and Jake held hands as they slowly walked through the corridors of DS9’s habitat ring. They’d just been to Tiana’s eighth birthday party. Their assortment of kids was staying with the birthday girl as an extra treat.
“This is nice. Reminds me of when we were dating.”
“When we were dating, we didn’t tell anyone. We hid in the access tunnels and made out.”
“And talked and had our quiet moments. It’s the quiet moments that I miss the most.”
Julian stopped to look down at Jake. “Do you regret-“
“No. I could never regret our life together but I can remember what we used to do before and wish for some of them back.”
Julian smile and grabbed Jake’s hand. He started pulling him in the opposite direction of their quarters.
“Julian,” Jake asked as he tugged back half-heartedly. “Where are we going?”
“To find the nearest access tunnel.”
