Agents West and Gordon are assigned to halt an organized outbreak of terror that has paralyzed a Western community. West poses as a Federal prison inspector to investigate reports of strange happenings at the prison that may be related to the crime wave. Warden Ragen shows West the prison's new electric chair, the first of its kind, which is due to be "broken in." But the agent discovers that the prisoners are being given the luxury treatment in return for offering their criminal talents to the Warden. His secret revealed, Ragen has a plan to get rid of West. Can Arte rescue his partner before he becomes the first to take a seat in the electric chair?
The Night of the Bars of Hell was the first of four The Wild Wild West episodes for Richard Donner, who went on to become one of Hollywood's biggest directors, with big-screen credits that include The Omen, the Lethal Weapon series, and Conspiracy Theory. Donner recalls his work with The Wild Wild West executive producer Michael Garrison fondly: "Garrison was one of the most outgoing, crazy, wonderfully funny men I had ever met. Back then, directors had little input on the episodes they worked on, but with Garrison, I had free-rein. I was involved with everything: editing, music, effects."
